Planting Trees and Building Tree Protectors

The mission of the Woodfield Community Orchard Project is to create and sustain an orchard which will enhance the biodiversity of the Woodfield Recreation Ground and thereby the wider Tooting Commons.

Friend of Tooting Common (FOTC) will be planting 6 black poplars as part of the Woodfield Community Orchard Project. The trees are very small, whips, and will need wooden structures built to protect them.

By facilitating the commitment and involvement of local people, schools and other organisations in planting, nurturing and harvesting the orchard, the Project will provide educational opportunities and improved health and well-being, and enrich the life of the community.

Come along and help to plant the trees for the orchard and build the tree protectors.

The tasks are as follows:

  • Digging the holes for the trees
  • Planting the trees and filling the holes with earth
  • Planting the stakes to support the trees and tying the trees to the stakes
  • Building the protective guards

Tools will be provided. It is recommended to wear sturdy, waterproof shoes as the grounds are often muddy and wet.
