Volunteers needed to act in an emergency scenario

Help Southwark Council be better prepared for emergencies (i.e. unexploded world war two bomb)

Location
Old Spike Roastery
54 Peckham Rye
London
SE15 4JR
Date and time
12:00 - 13:30
Wednesday, 24th of November 2021
Who this task will support
The British Red Cross
The British Red Cross is helps those in crisis across the globe as well as right here in the UK. We respond to crises big and small, whether that be a huge disaster such as the Indonesian tsunami and earthquake, a major incident like Grenfell or a more personal crisis like loneliness.

VIRTUAL EVENT - nothing is happening at Old Spike Roastery, just needed to put down a location.

The scenario exercise, run by Southwark Council, will simulate a ‘rest centre’ – a community centre where people would be evacuated to in the event of an emergency, in this case an unexploded world war two bomb. The exercise will allow British Red Cross volunteers, local authority officers and local organisations to practice what would happen in this situation, including registering attendees at the centre, providing emotional and practical support and signposting, and dealing with tricky requests. Although the exercise is run by Southwark, it will be attended by representatives from multiple South London local authorities.

Who is involved? British Red Cross Emergency Response Volunteers, Community Resilience Advocate Volunteers, Local Authority Officers and partner organisation volunteers are requested to join a scenario exercise held via Zoom to practice, discuss and reflect on the respective roles and responsibilities they have during an emergency when in a Rest Centre.

What will it entail? Using a number of scenario events (injects) based on real experiences and high risk scenarios, the exercise will analyse and discuss how, why and what would be done by volunteers and officers operating in a rest centre. The event will take place via Zoom and an informational session will cover everything you need to know about using Zoom, as well as other exercise details and support.

Exercise Focus: Working in a Southwark Rest Centre following evacuation after an unexploded ordnance (UXO) in the local area.

When is it? Join us for a 1 hour 30 minute lunch-time session on Wednesday 24th November, 12-1.30pm.
