Clean Conscience

#makingadifference
Clean Conscience work with the luxury hotel industry to save discarded hotel toiletries from landfill. Collected soap is sorted, sterilised, reshaped and distributed to those in need of sanitation both close to home and abroad. Recovered plastics are baled and sent for recycling. Their volunteers include groups with disabilities, who also benefit immensely from being able to contribute to a positive initiative.

11 GoodGymers have supported Clean Conscience with 4 tasks.

And easy squeezy Saturday night activity!

Saturday 15th May 2021

Written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

Rekha collected a mountain of boxes from Clean Conscience in Holyport, a charity supporting the Sierra Leone women’s development project. They needed help decanting hundreds of mini tubes of hand and body wash into 2 20 litre containers.

Rekha managed a third of a container at home before dropping them to the rest of the group (Sophie, Elliott, Jess, Ruth and Hannah) who came equipped with lots of layers and an electric outdoor heater.

This was also Hannah’s first GoodGym good deed- whooop! Go Hannah!

We prayed for dry weather and set to work. Wine, Prosecco, beer, music, nibbles and pizza kept us going for the 3 hours it took to fill both the bottles.

Thankfully we only had one light rain shower which was surprising after a crazy day of downpours followed by sunshine!

Everyone’s thumbs were aching by the end with lots of slippery moments where the tubes would spring out our hands or fall into the funnels when we tried to squeeze out every last drop!

It was a super fun task with lots of great chat, and a beautiful fruity aroma all the way through! The containers will be dropped back to the charity tomorrow ready for them to be shipped to Sierra Leone on Thursday.

Bray-lliant work team!

Wednesday 14th October 2020

Written by Amy L (she/her)

Amy, Robert and Juli met in the pretty Berkshire village of Bray to help Clean Conscience by distributing leaflets to residents. This was GoodGym's third leaflet dropping mission for the charity. It was lovely to be out in the fresh air, and armed with gloves and hand sanitiser we made safe and speedy work of the task. We all got our steps in for the day too: we ran 3.5km on the task, Juli also ran 6km in her round trip to and from our meeting point, Robert went for a post-task run, and Amy ran 7km on her way to and from another GoodGym session later in the day.

A bit more about the charity:

Their volunteers include groups with disabilities, who also benefit immensely from being able to contribute to a positive initiative.

Like so many other organisations, they are having to adapt during the Covid-19 pandemic. Whilst their hotel partners are largely closed, they are taking in donations of good quality clothes and other items. These are then either distributed to the charity's beneficiaries or sold in a lovely pop-up boutique that they have set up at their unit here at Thimble Farm Business Park.

Ready, aim, flyer!

Saturday 29th August 2020

Written by Amy L (she/her)

Amy and Jess enjoyed an early morning run to distribute flyers for local charity Clean Conscience. Starting at the Jolly Gardener pub in Moneyrow Green, we had a warm up run down Long Lane and then focused on the pretty hamlets of Touchen End and Paley Street. We had to play 'find the letterbox' as many of these lovely rural homes are gated and set back from the road. Time and mileage passed swiftly and by the time we finished we had covered nearly 10km and dropped around 140 leaflets. Kudos to Jess, who also cycled to and from this community mission. Next time we must go a bit later so we can enjoy a pizza in the pub when we finish!

Holy-port it's hot out there!

Wednesday 12th August 2020

Written by Amy L (she/her)

This evening's community mission took us South of Maidenhead to the pretty village of Holyport, where we were distributing leaflets for local charity Clean Conscience. And Holy-port it was hot! This heat-wave is unbe-leaflet-able!

Running with me sock and blister

This evening's team included sisters Sophie and Claire. No, they're not cockneys, but we couldn't resist a vaguely running related sister pun! Sophie and Claire ran to the task from their sister hood of Cox Green, as well as running rings around Holyport with Amy during the task. By the end of the evening these two had proven the existence of a rumoured motorway bridge (twice!), blown kisses to three more family members, and each run a whopping blister-popping 10km in a sauna - huge kudos to you both! Hopefully no real blisters...

Date night

This evening's group also included newcomers, husband and wife team Matt and Ayesha. A very warm (heatwave-style) welcome to you both! We have quite a few husband and wife teams in Windsor and Maidenhead, but they are normally tag teaming on childcare duties, so we are not accustomed to seeing both halves at the same time. So, this was quite special! And how did we celebrate? Well once we'd compared trainers and levels of sweatiness, we sent them off for a walk by themselves....

So sorry guys! As the fifth team member, and the only one who hadn't brought her family along, Amy just couldn't bring herself to ruin date night by being the third wheel. Ayesha and Matt, we hope you had a lovely walk. Please promise you will come back for another group session so we can get to know you more.

Drop it like It's hot

By splitting into two small groups we were able to cover a wider area, and we estimate we dropped around 200 leaflets in total - brilliant!

Does this run report Touch(en) you? This needn't be the End.... If you are keen to help, there are more leaflets wanting to go through letter boxes in the nearby villages of Touchen-End, Fifield and beyond. Contact Amy at amylovell@goodgym.org if you would like to take a stack and post them on your run, walk or bike ride. It is a lovely green area to explore!
