A brush with the fence

Sunday 26th January

Written by Mark Gilyead (he/him)

Great little sesh this morning:

🍁 Helen is the master of raking leaves from the canal (and not falling in). This means the canal doesn't get full of gunk and need an expensive de-silt.

🪥 Kelly and Rebecca cracked on with some diligent brushing of the railings to remove flaky paint before new paint can be added.

🍂 And I was getting all the dried leaves onto the compost heap.

Nice one all 👍👌

How many goodgymers does it take to plant 120 bulbs…

Sunday 3rd November 2024

Written by Bromley runner

Kelly, Mark and I met at the obelisk in Betts park for a spot of bulb planting on Saturday morning. And what a pleasant time we had!

We experimented with a few areas around the park - which we will monitor in Spring to see where is best for bulb growth!

Highlight for me was mark finding a strange carrot looking plant! If Anyone can identify id be interested to know what it is!

There’s not mushroom for the bulb of us…

Sunday 13th October 2024

Written by Hounslow runner

On a crisp Sunday morning three Goodgymmers arrived at Betts Park to join the Friends of Betts Park to perform a variety of tasks.

We spread out across the park, litter picking and bulb planting.

Whilst planting the bulbs we can across an assortment of wild mushrooms pondering 🤔 which ones would be safe to eat.

After the bulbs were planted we moved onto the fence over looking the canal. We started the first section of the fence sanding down the old paint making it ready for a fresh coat of paint to be added a later date.

Packed away the tools and went off to enjoy the rest of Sunday.

Logging out

Sunday 14th July 2024

Written by Mark Gilyead (he/him)

A nice little crew, part GG, part Friends of Betts Park got together to tackle a few tasks.

First up we freed some space on the steps down to the canal, chopping back brambles, pulling up weeds and Kelly did an ace job eking out the grass between steps.

Then we took a wheelbarrow of logs to a little wooded area to line the paths - cute.

Finally we spread some wildflowers in one of the community planters, hoping to bring some new life to them.

We even found some potatoes growing there. Dinner sorted.

Who let the logs out?

Monday 1st July 2024

Written by Mark Gilyead (he/him)

For tonight's task we headed to the delightful Betts Park, home of the last remaining section of the Croydon canal and a lovely new obelisk "dedicated to all the people who never get memorialised".

A few weeks back the council did some work chopping down some dying trees but they just left a couple of piles of logs and ivy. Our job was to sort the logs from the ivy, building up the "compost heap" and leaving the logs - maybe they will be a path edge one day?!

It turned out ivy was stubborn as hell but we did manage to free it all from the big logs eventually 💪

Whilst all this was happening, Molly was on a solo mission to de-weed the entrance to the shed - I hope those splinters have come out?!

Lovely stuff everyone, and I can't wait for our knowledge exchange event! 🙌

Gardening in the Rain? You Betts!

Sunday 28th April 2024

Written by Leaonie Watts

On a very wet Sunday morning Mark and I headed over to Betts Park to help out the Friends to keep the park looking lovely!

Thankfully the rain help off whilst we worked on an area that needed some TLC. We pulled out lots of tall weeds where they start the tours of Betts Park. That's right, they offer tours!

They says you only get one first impression! A job well done ✅️
