Peartree Green is near the site of the historic Supermarine Factory, known for its production of seaplanes and the Spitfire. During World War 2, air attacks aimed at the factory caused major destruction of the houses on the Green and left significant bomb craters. In the 1970s chalk from the construction of the M27 motorway was laid at the bottom of the Green, covering areas used for landfill in the 1960s and this has created a unique habitat for several varieties of orchids and insects.
History and careful management of the Green has encouraged plants and insects, rarely seen in other areas of the city, to thrive and include pyramidal orchid, marbled white butterfly and more recently white letter hairstreak butterfly. The flora and fauna of Peartree Green is regularly surveyed by Phil Budd, Southampton Natural History Society and other volunteers. They have kindly provided a list of species recorded.

I joined the lovely Friends of Peartree Green for another conservation session this morning. Phil had organised a nice spot of bramble clearance which is always a good workout. We were clearing out a few areas to allow some of the native wildflowers to flourish next year. They have three types of orchids and a whole host of fabulous fungi and wildflowers. We will be back next week for a spot of litter picking to keep the reserve as clean as possible.

Well it was a very satisfying task today joining with Phil and The Friends of Peartree Green Nature Reserve to clear out the ever persistent Virginia Creeper. There was a larger than usual group as we were joined by some Geo Caching people. I certainly enjoyed getting in amongst the trees cutting out as much as I could under the able eye of Phil who organises the sessions. They are running a Fungus Foray on the 2nd November which is for all the family and anyone interested in learning more about them.
