Kilburn + St Cuthbert's Church + Leaves + Wire-Based-Building-Projects

Saturday 16th November

Written by Alex Murtough (he/him)

This wonderful group of Andy, Cherian, and Max (and me) spent our morning: moving leaves > digging compost > finding avocado skins > bagging compost > discovering rusty bolts > learning how to detangle chicken wire > bashing sticks into ground > and (after it all) admiring our new wired pen for mulching leaves!

Thank you, all, for your work and fun this morning - you made a meaningful and lasting difference, and I know this pen will be much enjoyed and used over the coming years!

Thank you! And to next time!

Summer in Camden + Communal Gardens + An Evening Well Spent :)

Wednesday 17th July

Written by Alex Murtough (he/him)

Camden experienced summer yesterday evening. The weather forecast told me it'd be hot and dry, and even bright with minimal clouds, too.

I held my breath, I crossed my fingers.

And.

It held out!

Which meant for a bright and warm run through Camden to start our evening yesterday. Alison, Steve, and I worked our way through evening-tide streets, and we shared stories and chatter as we did.

Arriving at the special St Cuthbert's communal garden, we were met by fellow GoodGymer, Sarah, who had taken a canal-side cycle to make their way over.

Over 45 minutes, we collectively dug up a bush, filled multiple bags of compost, sawed through an old chain, and cut planks of old timber for disposal.

With 4 willing pairs of hands, we made a big difference in a short span. Thanks, everyone, it was great to see you all!!!

Here's to next time :)

Summer Night + Friends + Making a Difference in Kilburn :)

Wednesday 29th May

Written by Alex Murtough (he/him)

We met amidst a Summer North London on Wednesday. Gathered within the twilight brightness and between the commuters and passersby, our happy group met across the way from Belsize Park Station.

We had the joy of meeting Jade and Szymon, our two lovely newcomers, each on their first GoodGym outing - welcome!! They joined Jackie, John, and Steve, our GoodGym Camden regulars :)

Our journey to St Cuthbert's in Kilburn took us to busy thoroughfares and down quiet, leafy streets, and we saw a two-mile stretch of Camden's evening roads.

There's a special, peaceful, and beautiful gem of communal garden by St Cuthbert's in Kilburn. Hidden on the site of the original Victorian church, it's nestled in a restful space by the train tracks. This was our place to explore and help this week.

Across 50 minutes, and under the helpful guidance of our task owner Clare, we shifted a well-used pile of wood sleepers, re-balanced a tool shed and its underlining pallet, and hung the bunting (thanks to Szymon's tree climbing and Jackie's chair topping!) for this weekend's community event.

With 6 pairs of hands, we made a real difference; and with this wonderful group of interesting folk, I enjoyed stories, laughter, and conversation - thank you, everyone!

Here's to next time!

Five Went to Dig!

Saturday 27th April

Written by Alex Murtough (he/him)

Five were seen digging this morning...

...nestled behind Kilburn's residential streets, in a St Cuthbert's gorgeous communal green space, five well-meaning souls were seen chatting, laughing, and digging this morning.

Agatha and Will (on their first good-deeds, congrats!!) joined Steve, Pulin, and Alex, and we spent two and a half hours digging a trench for timber, laying timber, and announcing a new enclosed and sunken flower bed, ripe and ready for filling and growing :)

Thank you, all, for your time and work this morning. It was a joy to share the morning with you, and we made a real difference to the space, especially as we step towards the warm and spring!

See you at the next one!!
