It was biblical rain outside, but we didn't let that stop us!
A hilly route up to Heeley was our path to go and help Fran from Heeley Green Community Garden.
We started with some weeding of planters, in preparation for new plants going in.
We made quick work of this and next we set our sights a bit higher to cut back some of the overgrown tree branches to allow more light into this overgrown and dark area of the community garden.
By the time we had done this, the water was seeping in to the skin, but there's only so wet you can get so we ploughed on, continuing to weed the area and prepare it for future plantings.
When we were done the area was looking much more clear and ready for a future task of turning the soil over and planting some bulbs for the future!
Until next time, happy running :)

We had a new runner along to tonights task.
A BIG GG welcome to...
Please give her a woop, hola and cheer!
It was Amal's first run for quite a while and she did fantastically well on a hilly and long route. She maintained being able to chat with Celine who did an EXCELLENT job of being a really encouraging and supporting run buddy!
Really nice to see new people from other areas of the city getting involved with GG. Amal hails from Parsons Cross which is an area we haven't had people come from before. Amal said she had a great time and is looking to come back again next week! We hope to see you soon Amal!
This weeks task took us up, up and up to Heeley Green to meet with Fran Elliot and two neighbours to help with the green space the community there has taken ownership of.
This week the main task was to try and edge back the overgrown grass, brambles and weeds that were enroaching onto the path. In a relitively small space of time we got a lot done and it was a very noticeable and enjoyable task!
Hopefully we will be back again to continue the great work going on in this space of the city!
Until next time, happy running! :)

After an uphill run to Heeley Green Community Garden, we marvelled at the view with a beautiful sunset and admired all the hard work the community group had put in since we visited last - a new mural was added over the pond, the flowers were in blossoms and the fruit trees - including a peach tree! - looked strong.
Our host Fran explained the task: a pesky and unruly border was encroaching over the path which was taken over by nettles and other weeds and a bush.
We then grabbed our spades, dug, scraped, uprooted and plugged branches through fences, putting on our head torches in the process. Ah the days are getting shorter!
In no time, the path had been litter picked by Michelle and Jono, while Rachel, Tim, Sergiu, Cat, Charly, Becca and Celine freed most of the path up.
What a gorgeous community project led by the local residents of Heeley Green!

GoodGym runners Yusra, Natalie, Max, Caroline and Celine met with local volunteer gardeners Fran, Susan and Deborah to fill up newly built beds with topsoil. We wheelbarrowed our way through a hippo bag, and planted donated flowers. Within 2 hours we had a brand new garden! Just add water!
