Palace Road Nature Gardens

A wild oasis in Streatham
This small nature garden was created in the 1980s. It provides a varied habitat of both an open grassland and a wooded area of exotic and native trees. The pond attracts dragonflies and damselflies flying above and frogs and newts swimming below. Gerry always needs a hand to keep the paths clear of brambles and weeds and to make sure the public space can be enjoyed by everyone.

121 GoodGymers have supported Palace Road Nature Gardens with 28 tasks.

Pruning at the Palace (Road) !!

Tuesday 4th June

Written by Yianny (he / him)

Week two of two helping out Tom and this time we were off to Palace Road Nature Gardens, a lovely wild paradise in the Tulse Hill / Streatham area.

We were delighted to have Charlotte back with us for this one after a little hiatus, welcome back Charlotte!

Only 4 of us this evening so along with Tilly and Michael we set off from Papa's heading straight up Brixton Hill for decent 3km to the park. Michael and Charlotte were setting a good pace so forged on ahead and Tilly was kind enough to hang with AA Yianny all the way up the hill to our destination.

Tonight's task was simple (but never ending) we were helping Tom fight back against the Bindweed and prune back the lush growth which was threatening to take over the pathways around the pond. Given the recent weather lots of rain and bright sunny spells between the foliage was rampant and plenty of prickles were bedded in with the weeds making for a spikey game of weed-pull-roulette!

By just after 8pm we had cleared two small sections but there was plenty still to go so potential for plenty of follow up missions over the summer.

Conversation at the end turned to the GoodGym website (we love you GG web we really do) and favourite tub ice cream and also the crime of putting flavoured (i.e. not vanilla) with a pie or a crumble. I think we can all agree on that ;0)

Thanks to all and see you next week when you will be led by superstar Run Leader Joao while AA recovers from his marathon event this weekend - see you there!

Hammer Time 🔨🎵

Saturday 18th November 2023

Written by Nathan Wood

My task today was simple: Aggressively hammer at and remove some stubborn posts.

And to finish up there was a little bit of the standard laying woodchip on paths. We'll be back next week for more PLRN TLC

Ivy got you covered

Saturday 11th November 2023

Written by Lambeth runner

On this lovely Saturday morning with blue skies and a crisp air, GoodGym Lambeth teamed up with Tom and his local community gardening group to firstly clear ivy and weeds from around the pond, followed by one group cutting back brambles and the other, cutting back ivy to expose a lovely brick wall! We then carried all our weeds and cuttings to a compost heap and helped Tom store away the tools. All in all a very active and helpful morning!

Gardening at PRNG

Saturday 28th October 2023

Written by Nathan Wood

This was the usual Saturday morning task at PRNG.

This week we focused on clearing rubbish and weeds from two beds opposite the nature gardens. We then topped them with used coffee grounds which had been provided by the nearby cafe.

Wet but newt bailing 👊

Saturday 21st October 2023

Written by Nathan Wood

It was a wet Saturday morning. I confirmed with Tom that we'd meet despite the rain. Hardy 💪

On this session I was joined by Emma who made her return to Goodgym - mission 2 in the bag 🙌

The two of us and a few other of the Nature Garden volunteers worked at weeding an area if the park. We cleared brambles and bindweed which had taken over over summer. Clearing the growth we managed to find a newt - which confirms there is still pond life around!

We've made an impact over the last few weeks and the Gardens are looking transformed in the areas weve touched.

Join us next week 🗓
