The Real Junk Food Project: Sheffield is a non-profit social enterprise that operates using a pay as you feel concept in order to tackle food waste. The aim is to prevent perfectly edible and healthy food from going to landfill whilst promoting the value of food and, more importantly, people. The pay as you feel concept invites people to make a donation or to volunteer their time, skills and/or creativity in exchange for food, allowing people with different circumstances to have equal access to the food that is saved.
The organisation collects waste or surplus food from supermarkets and wholesalers, which is then redistributed to their two cafes, their Fuel For School programme and the Sharehouse Market, alongside their catering function and community partnerships. Currently, the project works 6 days a week, saving approximately 3000kg of food from landfill per day (the same weight as two adult hippopotami)! You can find out more by following them on Facebook:

On the penultimate @GGSHEFF run before Xmas we welcomed 2 new fantastic runners into the group. Please welcome, support and cheer;
After a brief welcome and chat about the soar legs in the group after the fantastic efforts the previous day at the infamous Percy Pud 10k we set off with DANGEROUS DAVE as our back marker to our task destination of The Real Junk Food Project - Sheffield, a fairly new task, but a massively worthy cause for the group to be involved with.
On arrival we were warmly welcomed into the warehouse by Logistics Manager AMAZING ALICE and volunteers.
Alice gave us a great brief splitting the group into 3 teams;
The teams got straight to work along to the tunes of cheesy xmas music to keep energy levels high, which were also topped up thanks to some generous snacks provided by the team at TRJFPS. A lot of our runners were in the market for a Xmas treat after being hampered by yesterdays 10k, volunteering and a few bevvies at Charlotte & Carys'. THANKS AGAIN BOTH!
All teams did a fantastic job and nothing hampered our efforts. After pudding everything away, we had a big group photo and Alice gave her thanks on behalf of TRJFPS for a market down crate effort by all...
We waved our goodbyes and headed homebound with a cheeky game of King/Queen of the hill to help shift the junk from our trunks. The crown on this occassion was won by the visiting wonder that is DANGEROUS DAVE who we all wish good luck on his PHD review today!
With climbing on Wed and the Regather Social on Dec 12th after our last run before Xmas on the 11th there is still plenty of GG action to get involved in and earn those mince pies so make sure you've signed up to them all and keep an eye on the WhattsApp group for other festive treats!

With a special round of applause for @GGSHEFF 50 good deed veteran SUPER SAM we assembled for our group photo where he took centre stage before we headed of into the night air to this weeks destination of The Real Junk Food Project Sheffield (TRJFPS).
On arrival we were warmly greeted out of the cold November air into the warmth of the warehouse by
TRJFP had plenty of Junk in their trunk, so it was time for a @GGSHEFF pallet cleanse... We were given what has to be one of the best task briefs I have seen using a whiteboard to outline the evenings task which involved shifting pallets and stock into a new easier to manage system for TRJFPS. We also had branches of teams on other tasks including:
The team really got into the groove with the work and had a crate time of it all!
Following a brief re-fuel we headed back out into the crisp air of the night for our return run which included some great sprint loop and returns and we even had time to fit in some box jumps and hill reps up the dreaded COBBLED KILLER
Back at base and after a stretch and news share we had a chat over a pint re setting some goals for 2018 which everyone did, so make sure you all log them on your account so we can cheer you all on and support everyone along.
Until next time, happy running! :)

15 FANTASTIC @GGSheff runners ran 3km to help put up shelves and power wash a floor for The Real Junk Food Project (TRJFP).
After listening to a touch of cultured Jazz at base and welcoming DANGEROUS DAVE back from Manchester to save his streak for the month we headed off to a new task for this week to go and help TRJFP.
With a run to a new part of town, the excitement in the team was palpable! On arrival to TRJFP we were very professionally welcomed by the fantastic staff and volunteers that help to keep TRJFP up and running on a day to day.
AWESOME ALICE gave us some great info on TRJFP and told us the task for the eve, how many people each task needed and what to watch out for.
The teams consisted of:
At the end of our time the floor was given a new lease of life and the warehouse had two new rows of shelving for TRJFP to use on an ongoing basis which they would not have had any time to put up. GREAT JOB TEAM!
After learning a little more about TRJFP, the Sharehouse market and the cafe's we grabbed some intercepted sustenance and said our goodbyes until next time.
On the way back we chucked in some Park Hill box jumps followed by some paired hill sprints to finish.
It was a hot one, so following stretching we headed into the Showroom and replaced some liquids and laughs before parting ways until next week.
