Today was a fantastic session where thirteen GoodGymers from GG Bexley, GG Greenwich and GG Ealing came together to make a real difference at Crossness Pumping Station, built in the 1800s as part of London's first sewage system.

It was lovely to have Dinali and Ian with us for their first GG task, and celebrate Mo's 10th good deed.

We were met by Tom, the museum's Volunteering Manager who, after a warm welcome, split us into two groups.

'Team Ballast' worked with regular volunteer Rob and others on the narrow gauge railway. We dug out a shallow trench under the lifted tracks, and shoveled in ballast stones to help restore the line ready for re-opening to the public.

Rob said that it would have taken one person a whole day to complete what we achieved in just one hour 💥.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the site in the Victorian Formal Garden, 'Team Lavendar' was busy cutting back lavender. It smelled lovely! The cuttings will be used to make bars of soaps, which will be sold in the shop.

For both teams it was amazing to see how much we could accomplish by working together.

After tea and biscuits in the Ness Cafe, we had a brief look at the historical display of toilets in the museum - including one of the first flushing models by Thomas Crapper.

Then we put on hard hats and safety glasses, for Tom's tour of the incredible engine hall, giving the opportunity to learn more about the history and engineering behind this fascinating place.

We certainly put all our senses to work, including experiencing some of the distinctive smells associated with the historic pumping station and its original purpose 💩!

Overall, it was a brilliant opportunity to contribute to the local area, learn about its history and engineering, and make a positive impact through volunteering, and show that when we come together and work as a team, we can achieve so much more than we could alone.

This weeks, Team GoodGym Bexley was back at Days Lane Primary School continuing our mission to give their fences a fresh new look before the children return in September.

After getting stuck in last week, there is something especially satisfying about returning to a task and being able to see the progress from one session to the next.

As ever, the evening was a great example of what GoodGym is all about: keeping active while doing something positive for the local community. Some of us walked there and back together, and while painting might not look like a workout at first glance, after plenty of squatting, reaching, bending, stretching and moving up and down the fence line, everyone had certainly earned their GoodGym credentials!

For anyone who wasn't quite so keen on picking up a paintbrush, there was also a spot of gardening to tackle, meaning there really was something for everyone to get involved with.

And the GoodGym good vibes continued thanks to Marianna, who very kindly baked cheesecake for everyone to share. It was totally delicious and after all that painting and gardening, it was the perfect way to round off another productive session.

Another evening of keeping fit, doing good and making our local area that little bit nicer, one fence panel at a time!

Seven GoodGymers headed to Days Lane Primary School for our very first task there — and we certainly picked a dramatic evening for it.

While the skies were busy putting on a total solar eclipse, we had our own transformation happening a little closer to ground level: turning the school fence a rather lovely sky blue.

Armed with brushes, paint and plenty of enthusiasm, the seven of us worked our way along the fence and made a pretty impressive dent in the job. There’s something very satisfying about seeing a tired-looking stretch of fence become brighter with every brushstroke — especially when you’ve got a whole team working together.

Sadly, unlike the eclipse, our fence transformation wasn’t quite total… 🌘 We ran out of evening before we ran out of fence.

Luckily, this is only the beginning of our partnership with Days Lane Primary School, and we’ll be back next week to finish the job.

A brilliant first task, a very blue fence, seven willing painters and one rather spectacular sky. Not bad for a Wednesday evening!
