Bristol Report written by Shona Buchanan
Three Tasks, 56 GoodGymers, 15,000 Good Deeds, 10 years of GoodGym and a 200th Good Deed ๐ฒ
What a mammoth session we had ahead of us tonight! It was great to be joined by Maddy for the first time - welcome Maddy! After a game of Shona Says (which everyone is getting far too good at), we split into our three groups to get started on our three tasks and mini-tasks we had ahead of us to celebrate. Not only did each group have to complete their task, they had to try and take a creative photo of 15,000 while they were at it and think of a pun which somehow included 15,000 deeds, ten years and Richard's achievements.
Mel's group did a walk/run session to The Southville Centre to give the paintwork a final push to finish it off just in time for the change of seasons. They are now the proud owners of newly protected wooden features as well as painted bathrooms. Great job team!
Richard B took his group to Easton and St Werburgh's to help The Children's Scrapstore advertise their upcoming Community Reuse Festival on the 28th-29th September. They managed to hand out a whopping 350 leaflets in the local area in just 30 minutes.
Atrenchion please
The rest of the group headed up the hill to help Youth Moves at their allotment. This local charity engages young people from the city in community projects, including their allotment. We joined the young people in digging the ground around the polytunnel ready to build a trench to fix the tunnel and to cut back a very overgrown area. It was all hands on deck to get as much as possible done in our 30 minutes, and we managed to make a big dent in it. Matt also spent a long time being the artistic director behind the 15,000 photo, so please do show it sufficient appreciation.
All's Will that ends Will
Once we had all admired the sunset from our respective parts of Bristol, we reconvened at Queen Square to take on 15,000 squats. I think everyone regretted being quite so good over the past few years at this point! 277 squats each (don't do the maths) and we were all very much ready for a sit-down. Luckily, we were getting to co-ordinate all of this squatting with the brilliant achievement of Richard (Will) Breakspear achieving his 200th Good Deed!! Well done Richard, what an amazing number, the last 100 of which he has done in just 14 months! He is also now the proud owner of a t-shirt with him in the 17th Century on it.
This also produced the wonderful news that there was double cake for everyone to have a good sit down and munch while we read the GoodGym stories and spotted several Bristol names and faces in the book.
What a great night of celebration, which will be continued with Super Saturday!
Thanks to Russ who won tonight's three subjects, one pun competition. I am looking forward to your answer on the other competition of how many prime numbers in 15,000
Wed 18th Sep 2019 at 5:39am
There are 1,754 primes less than or equal to 15,000.

I suspect theyโre all less than 15,000 ;-)

Between the rain storms of this afternoon, we gathered for another session of doing good. It was great to have Jamie and Jade join us for the first time tonight and get stuck in with the tasks. And a big shout out to Danica and Paul who jogged with ease despite being 2 days post-marathon!
After getting warmed up, we headed to Felix Road Adventure Playground. They are currently hosting 200-300 children every day for the summer holidays so the team and the playground needed an injection of GoodGym enthusiasm to give them a boost.
Under lock and key
Once we distributed the tools which the team had left for us, we soon we realised we needed more to tackle the mounds of brambles and bushes surrounding the Under-5s Play Area. We knew there was a pile of said tools in the shed, the only problem was finding the key... Queue Mel doing a grand detective job of trying key after key in the shed lock...
Hand weeding, the latest trend
The team were not deterred. After a quick shelter in the playhouse from a particularly heavy shower storm, the gardening teams got to work hand-weeding (we've decided it's a thing) and pulling out the overgrown areas. With the addition of 6 pairs of tools, the two gardening groups weeded all of the pathway and cut back a big section of the play area.
Meanwhile, Mel continued to try different keys...
The rest of the team split into three groups. We had our classic litter-pickers, who filled 3 bags of rubbish from around the playground due to the busy summer days. The staple-removers continued the all-important (and divisive) task of preparing the walls for painting. They continued to add to our now in-depth knowledge of just what equipment works for getting rid of those pesky bits of metal (staple-removers are the worst, so you know). Finally, we had a team on sweeping all of the patio and football pitch areas, topped off by a brush-removal of a football from the top of the net - impressive stuff.
Mel was still trying keys as we called time-up and, not one to be defeated, has promised that next time there will be a sub-group that is on key organising.
We ran back, found out that Richard B is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and sent a group of hungry runners to Three Brothers for this month's GoodGym Eats - thank you for organising Danica!
Tuesday 9th July 2019
Andrea Jonat has done their first good deed with GoodGym.
Andrea is a now a fully fledged GoodGym runner. They've just run to do good for the first time. They are out there making amazing things happen and getting fit at the same time.

It was great to have Jess and Joanne join us tonight for their first group runs - welcome and we look forward to seeing you back soon! We were also delighted to be joined by Klara tonight, who is going to be the wonderful new Trainer of Exeter when it launches on 20th August. She put the group through their paces as Trainer of Bristol tonight to get ready for the big day...
Happy Campers
After Klara getting us warmed-up, we split into two groups. Alice returned to her land legs after her weekend smashing the Swoosh and led half the group to Emmaus to get stuck in with a cush(ion)y task. This involved the group arranging all of the sofas in the warehouse into perfect formation (and then having a lie down for all of their hard work). The rest of the team were on tent duty. They erected all of the tents to ensure they were in good condition then took them back down and packed them neatly away to be sold. Alice gave the team the 5 minute challenge to take a four-person tent down in. Who knew Tuesday nights were full of so much skills training?
Here we go round the mulberry bush, the mulberry bush, the mulberry bush
Which is what the rest of us did once we had met Laura from Bedminster Patchwork. This community group own patches of green space around the area which they manage. The Myrtle Street Orchard is now not open to the public but the local school looks onto it. It has become overgrown in the hot weather, so we armed ourselves with gloves and tools and went round and round the mulberry bush but did it while hacking, chopping and pulling out as much as we could to bring the orchard back to life. All the while avoiding the wasps and ants nest which we had brought to the surface in this wildlife haven and - for a couple of our poor more allergic GoodGymers - avoiding the grass completely by sticking to some litter and fruit picking (separately, don't worry).
That was mint
After getting some goodie bags of mint and fruit to take back home with us, we headed back to Queen Square for Klara to put us through our paces with some circuit training. Exeter GoodGymers are definitely going to become a fit bunch! After all of that, we were ready for a well-earned sit-down and drink, as we waved Klara goodbye and good luck for next month.
Thanks to Matt, Tim and Julie for the puns!
