Grandmaster Trash and the Eager Eight

King's College London Report written by Alyx Murray-Jackman

Tonight we had a change in task and we decided to take part in the Great British Spring Clean by trying out some "trogging" along the Thames Path. Trogging is our version of the new Scandinavian running-rage "Plogging" (plastic jogging). Runners take out a bag with them and pick up plastic as they run, to help keep the local streets clean. As we were picking up all kinds of trash we decided to call our version "trogging".

After marvelling at how light it now is in the evenings, and before explaining about the task this evening we welcomed a new runner to the crew - everyone give James a cheer for joining us to do good and get fit! We also heard about the monthly "Rave Runs" that King's Sport are putting on (next one is 28th March!) and about the GoodGym Shindig, which you'll need to sign up for by Sunday if you want the chance to come along. After the news, and while we were warming up, we found out what the best treasure item each person has ever found. With answers ranging from a double fossil to £80, we were hoping to get a good haul from the London streets tonight!

We headed out towards Blackfriars Bridge at a nice and steady pace whilst picking up rubbish en route. Just 5 minutes in our bags were half full and we had amassed 2 wine bottles, several coffee cups and a lot of screwed up old meeting notes! We crossed over the river and wound our way around the Waterloo area, amongst all the commuters, before finding our way to Bernie Spain Gardens, where we stopped off to do a quick sprinting exercise. After lots of hard work and fantastic technique from the team we headed back to King's over Waterloo Bridge, picking up litter along the route again.

We made it back to King's with 4 full bags of litter, 4km of running under our belts and 8 pairs of tired legs, but we still had a bit of time and energy to fit in a quick core workout - fab work everyone! We didn't find any significant pieces of treasure while we were out and about today, but Rachel did bag herself a wonderful Mother's Day balloon.

We will be meeting at the same place and time again next week, so come and join us for more fun, getting fit and doing good!
