Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
Lift the Curfew is a campaign by This Girl Can. #LetsLiftTheCurfew highlights the concerns many women feel when getting active outdoors after dark by calling for a safer and more inclusive experience.
Area Activator Simon was thrilled to meet with a top crew of Goodgym runners and volunteers at the Arsenal Community Hub last night, and particularly grateful to be introduced to 4 first time Goodgymmers! (welcome!). Together, we performed a short warm up on the Emirates Stadium slopes, before running 1 mile together up Highbury Hill, and back down to Elizabeth House Community Food Hub on Hurlock Street.
Elizabeth House offer an incredible resource for residents in Islington, Highbury and Finsbury Park. Affordable food and produce donated from stores and growing projects across the city and available to local people and families. The hub operates as a walk-in supermarket, allowing visitors to pick out their choice of food and essentials. However, a lot of regulars are unable to physically attend the food hub during school holidays and breaks, so Goodgym are happy to assist with deliveries on foot!
We had a couple of deliveries, typically performed on a cargo bike, located about 1 km away from the hub. These were completed by two top groups who were up for a bit of orienteering to find the correct houses for these important parcels. The rest of our team helped with some speedy deliveries around the Twyford House estates before returning back to Elizabeth House.
For the remainder of the evening, our crew helped with closing down the food hub, ready for kid's club the next day. Any non-perishable food and items were brought back to the storage cupboards, and all surfaces were cleaned up. Our next task involved separating the fresh fruit and vegetables (including amazingly varied food like samphire, alfalfa shoots and mooli radishes!) into good quality stock or overly ripe produce. The softer stuff was then taken to a compost bin outside, ready to be used for more growing projects.
Tables and chairs were packed away, crates were returned to their original spots and all of the floors were spotless by the time we finished. Well done everyone- we hope to return for more assistance over the busy Christmas period too!

8 fitness finding GoodGymers smashed a strength and conditioning circuit with some dominant multi paced running.
As spring approaches the evenings are getting slightly brighter and we had some sparkling performances from the runners this evening!
Starting off with a Power Walk and relaxed paced jog down to Emirates Stadium we got quickly into our stride with some balance developing dynamic warm up drills. We squeezed out some precise calf raising marches before getting our run on along the Stadium concourse.
Flipping the script we got into some strength and conditioning exercises with Squats, calf raises, lunges, star jumps and mountain climbers all intertwined with a recovery running.
Then we upped the anti with a core blast of Planks and dorsal raises with shuttle runs and tempo running thrown into the mix. Before finishing strong with 2 huge efforts on two split paced long runs!
Some static stretches and we were done with a top effort and exercise execution complete!
Be great to see you next week for the last in this block in Islington before we move on in March!! Sign up and come along!!

8 Hardcore GoodGymers Hop, Skipped and Ran their way to Running Fitness glory at Fitness 4 All- Islington.
After a smooth 6 minute jog down to the North London Footballing Colosseum.
We got to work with a range of ** Linear** running drills to really focus on being the most efficient runners we can be! Really focusing on getting our arms and legs to stick to their own lane and work forward and backwards with minimal side to side action.
We marched, skipped, lunged, and hopped in perfect linear motions! We then threw in some fast footed toe tapping line drills as well as some super side to side squats and before we knew it we had smashed out 20 minutes of Running form improving drills!!
Moving onto the running portion of the session we worked a Speed Sandwich! with a few easy to Tempo 100 metre shuttles followed by 4 Speedy 50 metre Accelerations then Sandwiching the Speed with a couple of 2 minute Tempo efforts!
16 minutes of great effort and action was rewarded with a genealogical trot back to base talking about all things running!
Great job coming along in such abrasive conditions! See you next Thursday for some more Fitness 4 All action!

Islington Report written by Marina
10 fitness seeking GoodGymers skilfully dominated the first Fitness 4 All session of the month long stay in Islington.
On a windy evening in North London we used the bright lights of Emirates stadium to illuminate our running track for the evening.
After a 5 minute warm up jog we mobilised and activated some key running muscles and joints before beginning a series of running form drills designed to improve our running efficiency.
We worked on knee drive, foot strike and arm swing to get a taster of a few fundamental running form skills.
We then moved onto the main meat of the session where we worked on our pacing skill to repeat 3 sets of three 150m reps in exact times with the added variable of a stiff Northerly wind.
Some excellent Pacing Skills as well as ever important mental focus and determination brought us to a top work out for all runners!
A gentle warm down and static stretch out finished off a great fitness session!!
Hope to see you all again next week for some more Thursday Fitness 4 All action!
