Daff's the way to do it!

Bexley Report written by Sarah W

Discover Welling does a fantastic job helping to make the town a nicer place to live, and we were happy to lend a hand this evening, giving some TLC to the planters on the High Street and clearing leaves and litter from around the area.

While some of us tackled the prickly thistles that had taken hold in one of the flower beds, others blitzed the litter and gathered up fallen leaves.

Then it was time to get planting! Lots of daffodil bulbs were carefully dug in, ready to bring a lovely splash of yellow to the High Street next spring. ๐ŸŒผ

Once the tools were packed away, we enjoyed the tasty Jaffa Cake cookies that have been the talk of recent tasks. They certainly lived up to the hype! ๐Ÿช Thank you, Alice!

Three of us then headed to the nearby pub for a bit of socialising and to round off a productive evening together. ๐Ÿป

A great evening of teamwork, gardening, tidying and community spirit.

The Gourd, the Bad and the Bindweed

Bexley Report written by Sarah W

Laura and the team from Holy Redeemer Pre-School had asked us to help get the outdoor area ready for back-to-school tomorrow.

When we arrived - between us walking, running and cycling to get there - Laura pointed us towards the fruit and vegetable garden where nature had run wild during the summer holidays!

The brambles had thrived, the gourd plants had launched a full-on invasion of the strawberry plants in the raised bed in the other side of the path ๐ŸŽƒ ๐Ÿ“ , weeds were rife among the strawberries, and sneaky bindweed had wound its way around pretty much everything!

Gloves on, and secateurs and shears at the ready, we got busy cutting back and pulling-up. Then we more gently untangling bindweed from the tomato and gourd plants plants, careful not to damage their precious fruits that the children will be so excited to see.

After filling the garden waste bin to the brim and a quick sweep up, we were done.

Now the path around the plants is clear for the children to walk around and explore what's growing. We hope they'll be delighted to see the colourful fruit and vegetables, and our guess is that there will be some tasting going on too!

We'll be back again at the end of the month, helping turn old pallets into storage for music instruments! Come and join us - the more the merrier!

I will always weed you ๐ŸŽถ

Bexley Report written by Susan Lee (She/her)

This week we were back at the Welling Library to finish off the weeding and litterpicking at the front and along the side of the building. Some of us ran a short distance to the task.

We had some new equipment in the form of secateurs and shears to aid us, and we had it all looking great in no time!

After tidying away we had the obligatory group photograph then headed to the pub to celebrate Sarah's birthday!

Not For The Fence Of Heart

Bexley Report written by Sarah W

This weeks, Team GoodGym Bexley was back at Days Lane Primary School continuing our mission to give their fences a fresh new look before the children return in September.

After getting stuck in last week, there is something especially satisfying about returning to a task and being able to see the progress from one session to the next.

As ever, the evening was a great example of what GoodGym is all about: keeping active while doing something positive for the local community. Some of us walked there and back together, and while painting might not look like a workout at first glance, after plenty of squatting, reaching, bending, stretching and moving up and down the fence line, everyone had certainly earned their GoodGym credentials!

For anyone who wasn't quite so keen on picking up a paintbrush, there was also a spot of gardening to tackle, meaning there really was something for everyone to get involved with.

And the GoodGym good vibes continued thanks to Marianna, who very kindly baked cheesecake for everyone to share. It was totally delicious and after all that painting and gardening, it was the perfect way to round off another productive session.

Another evening of keeping fit, doing good and making our local area that little bit nicer, one fence panel at a time!

๐ŸŒˆ Rainbow Ready, Postcards Steady, GoodGym Go!

Bexley Report written by Sarah W

Six GoodGymers met at Sweet Fig Coffee Lounge this morning, ready to take a colourful message out into the local community. Our mission was to deliver postcards promoting Demelzaโ€™s Rainbow Run, helping spread the word about this brilliant fundraising event.

We had two young helpers along for the fun, plus Jay the dog, so our delivery team had plenty of energy and four-legged enthusiasm! Three of us had already clocked up local parkruns before meeting up, so there was certainly no shortage of miles in the legs.

With the sun shining, we headed out around the local streets, popping Rainbow Run postcards through letterboxes along the way. Our final stretch took us through The Goat Field (the local name for Holy Oak Tree Park) making for a lovely end to our route.

Then it was back to Sweet Fig for refreshing drinks and some sweet treats. Sam the owner always makes us feel so welcome.

A colourful morning all round!๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ•
