Barnet Council recently initiated a climate emergency and asked local people to support and commit to sustainable activities. Below are a few comments from goodgym Members who responded to the initiative.
It’s interesting how often things that are better for the environment will also improve our own health and well-being.
Latoya committed to walk to the station rather than catching the bus.
Richard said ‘It is a very nice initiative from Barnet Council. I love sustainability. By the way buying fruits and veg without plastic is a great challenge in Tesco. I wish they change their attitude.’
Harvey has made the following suggestion: We each commit to an action on https://count-us-in.com/ then post it on our social media? Spreading the word is easy!
Paul committed to using a bike as much as possible. Substantially cutting down eating meat. Supporting other groups and organisations working on sustainability. Engage with local politicians on the subject. Support tree planting with the Earth Watch Tiny Forest initiative. https://earthwatch.org.uk/get-involved/tiny-forest. Echo show and tell a barnet initiative. Check out https://greatbiggreenweek.com/
Goodgym looks to promote sustainable activities in our community. We do this by physically supporting local green spaces. Building fitness and resilience in our members. Encouraging active travel. Cycling walking, running. Discover and engage with our local environment and its communities. Check out our reports https://www.goodgym.org/areas/barnet/reports What’s my motivation? If we physically engage with our environment (and its communities) studies show it improves our sense of well being and connection. Active travel improves our health and of the environment. Fourteen magnificent GoodGym members came together in HighGate Woods to help the Ranger with Forest fencing. It was a lovely crisp winters morning as we gathered to listen to Cindy explain what we were doing. Quite simply we were repairing forest fences to protect the bluebells for the spring. We set to work and Cindy seemed very impressed at how quickly we got The job done so we had time for a tour of the forest. This included information on the history, forest management, and wildlife. thank you Cindy! Hope you enjoyed the session and don’t forget to give a cheer to the people you worked with on the GoodGym website. in particular give your support and a cheer to Henna Dorota on their first community mission.
Some of us went for a coffee others went on to another community mission in Crouch end! Well done all!
We gather again on Tuesday evening at the phoenix cinema 7 pm to help A forest school one kilometre away.
Thanks for coming and making a difference in your local Community.

Nicole Albert earned their community cape by completing their first community mission.
Nicole completed a community mission. Instead of watching TV or lying in bed, Nicole was out there making their community a better place to be. For making that choice they have earned the community cape.

Together in Barnet is a fantastic charity that looks after homeless people in Barnet. Due to the Covid outbreak rough sleepers have been housed in a hotel in Golders Green. Churches and synagogues across the borough have come together to produce a main meal and breakfast for the guests every day. Goodgym Barnet offered to transport the food in this case from the parishioners at St Mary‘s Church Finchley. Thanks to Sophia and Akosua who produced a fabulous main meal and breakfast. well done to Nicole on her first GoodGym mission transporting the food to the hotel. There we met Simon from TIB and together we distributed the meals to the 12 guests at the residence. thanks again to all those volunteers involved in producing and distributing the meals.
