A Brush with the Elements

Brent Report written by Tabitha Skinner

On Monday evening Meg, Tabitha and Pete met in Willesden , and ran to Brent Mencap, where we were joined by Anne Mari and Tania. Brent Mencap is dedicated to supporting Brent residents with learning disabilities, and they have a beautiful garden for its service users, but the tool shed was in desperate need of a fresh coat of paint.

Our task for the day was painting this shed white. We started off with a quick sweep of the shed with the brooms, then poured out the white paint and got to work with our paintbrushes and rollers. We worked well as a team, and it was a very satisfying task to watch the shed transform before our eyes. We had almost finished and the rain decided to join us!

This made us more determined to complete the job and in no time at all, the shed was sparkling white and we packed up ready to go!

Great work everyone

Walls well that ends well

Brent Report written by Pete

5 of us went to Mora Primary school to paint. Karen, Pete and Hannah met at Beer n Burger. It was Hannah's very first Goodgym session so a warm welcome Hannah. We did a short warm-up then jogged 2km to Mora Primary school. We took out the mats and paint / brushes which had been left for us. Hannah and Karen proceeded to roller and paint the first corridor wall that we had been assigned while Pete took photos, arranged for more brushes and looked out for Lee and Tania. They both joined shortly after and got stuck in. We painted the corridor walls outside the classrooms in the main hall a lovely magnolia. All very satisfactory. We then cleared up, put our tools away and took a quick group selfie. Tania then went to hers, Lee walked and Karen Hannah and Pete jogged back to B & B. We did a short cool down then stopped for a drink at B & B. Well done everyone.

Tea and Trimming

Brent Report written by Tania

When I arrived, Mr.B was feeling under the weather because of his breathing difficulties, so we started with a cup of tea before tackling the overgrown space. I offered him to have a rest while I transformed his garden, but he refused and insisted on helping. We made a great team, tackling the overgrown lawn together. I managed the mower while he expertly handled the hedge trimmers, tackling the areas I couldn't reach. We created quite a pile of clippings! A final sweep of the path completed the transformation. The garden looked fantastic, much to the dismay of the resident cat who had lost his favorite sunbathing spot.

Weeding it Out. Round 2!

Camden Report written by Tania

This time, I was armed with a plan and fresh from my victory over the first wave of weeds a few weeks back. But those pesky plants had a few weeks to strategize too! They'd sprouted into giants, sprawling across the ground and throwing my initial plan out the window.

No worries though, I adapted! I grabbed my trusty trimmer (from last time) and a pair of secateurs for good measure. A garden rake became my new best friend for gathering the fallen foes.

Green bags were the first choice for weed disposal, but to cover more ground quickly, I ended up with a respectable weed mountain. The garden's not weed-free yet, but it's a world better than where we started!

The best part? Mrs. M. absolutely loved the progress. That kind of appreciation really fuels the volunteer spirit! And if there's another weed-wrangling mission, sign me up! I'm ready to tackle anything Mrs. M.'s garden throws my way.
