Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Paul Salman
GoodGym Barnet headed to the churchyard at St Mary’s, one of Barnet’s oldest and most historic buildings.
We met Helen and Julian, who are working to photograph and catalogue some of the churchyard’s fascinating protected gravestones. Armed with loppers and saws, we cleared away the vegetation that was obscuring them, ready for the photography to take place the following day.
It was a satisfying evening helping to uncover and record an important part of Barnet’s history — well worth protecting for future generations.
he church was established sometime in the 12th century. There is reference to a church here in 1274, and evidence of a building even before then. By 1356 it was dedicated to St Mary.[2] The building has been altered many times since its foundation and the oldest parts, the north wall and the tower (which seems to have had a steeple during the 16th and 17th centuries), date from the reign of King Henry VII.
