Foodcycle Mitcham

FoodCycle Mitcham is a community project that transforms surplus food into free, nutritious meals, offering a welcoming space every Thursday evening at Togetherness Community Centre for anyone seeking food and companionship.

Operating every Thursday evening at the Togetherness Community Centre in Mitcham, the project welcomes guests from all walks of life to share a hot meal and engage in friendly conversation in a warm, inclusive environment.

The meals are prepared by dedicated volunteers using surplus food collected from local supermarkets and grocers, ensuring that perfectly edible food is diverted from landfill and put to good use. Volunteers take on various roles, including cooking, hosting, and food collection, all contributing to the creation of a welcoming space where guests can enjoy both nourishment and companionship.

By fostering connections among community members and promoting sustainability, FoodCycle Mitcham not only provides immediate support to those facing hardship but also works towards building a more resilient and connected local community.

They began with pizza served alongside a fresh carrot, apple and cabbage slaw, followed by a flavour-packed kimchi fried rice topped with a soft-boiled egg and a spring onion and coriander sauce. To finish, guests enjoyed a banoffee Rice Krispie treat paired with banana custard, which proved a real crowd-pleaser. They even received a huge pumpkin as a donation. Currying Favour: A Paws-itively Uplifting Session

Thursday 7th August

Written by Zaeem

This session at Foodcycle Mitcham saw a higher-than-usual turnout, with approximately 30 guests in attendance. Despite receiving a limited delivery of fruit and vegetables, the team adapted quickly and efficiently. Our chefs prepared a hearty vegetable and rice curry, which was well received, and served cake for dessert.

A particularly heartwarming moment was when one guest brought along her emotional support puppies, which brought smiles and comfort to many of the guests and volunteers.

Overall, it was a successful and uplifting session that demonstrated flexibility, teamwork, and community spirit.
