We to(y)tally nailed this one!!!

Tuesday 25th February 2020

Written by Sam Ollason

GoodGym Bath ran to Oldfield Baptist church to give their toys a thorough steamin' and cleanin'! The toys are used by the weekly toddler group and they are all well used and well loved. We had a lot of fun making a noticable difference to this community group and ran 4km in total.

GG Social

Next Tuesday after the run we are going to The Stables for some food. Please sign up so we have an idea of numbers to book a table.

Running to Oldfield Park

Emily led the run from the leisure centre out to Oldfield Park and we met our host Paul. Lots of us have been to this task before, but for those who hadn't been before Paul explained that they get around 40 families (over 100 people) at each of the toddler group sessions. There are lots of different toys that can always do with a cleaning.

Steamin' and Cleanin'

Some of us were on the kitchen crew and we put lots of smaller plastic toys through the dishwasher and wiped them dry. We got through a big box of Duplo and a huge box of plastic food items that the toddlers use in their mini kitchen. We were amazed to find individual plastic pringle crisps!

Another group of runners were spraying and wiping down the larger toys. There was a big elephant slide and lots of musical instruments that were quite sticky and benefited from our cleaning!

Finally, another group of GoodGymmers used the steam cleaner on the fabric toys. The rocking horse looked a lot happier after we had steamed her!

At the end we lined all of the toys back up and we were pleased how much cleaner they looked and smelled! It was a really rewarding and fun evening!

Thanks!

Thanks to Paul for setting up for us and for hosting us. We really appreciate it, Paul. Thanks to Rachel and Phoebe for backmarking for us and thanks to Emily for leading the run.

Never running out of steam!

Tuesday 22nd October 2019

Written by Sam Ollason

A group of GoodGym volunteers ran through Bath to Oldfield Park. We had fun cleaning toys for a Toddler's play group that meet at Oldfield Baptist Church. There was a lot to do but we managed to get it all done! We ran 5km and felt good after getting a good training run done.

Welcome, Will!

We met at the leisure centre and welcomed a new runner to the group, Will. Thanks for coming along and getting stuck in last night, Will. Hopefully we will see you again for another run soon!

After a warm-up we ran through Kingsmeade Square, through Green Park station and through to Oldfield Park. Our host, Paul, welcomed us to the church and explained our task. We were asked to clean all of the toys that are used by the Toddler group that meet there. Every Tuesday morning from 10-12 there are over 100 families that meet at the group. Unsurprisingly, the toys get lots of loving so they need a good clean every so often! Some of us have been along to do this task before, but there are always new additions to their catalogue of toys!

We broke off into teams to get this task completed. Some of the runners busied themselves in the kitchen setting up a chain to put plastic toys in the washing machine, dry them off and re-box them. Lots of the Lego blocks and plastic fruit went through this process (everyone always seems excited by the eggs and, of course, the aubergine...).

Stop playing around!

Another team got down on their knees with rags and disinfectant to give the larger plastic toys a good wipe over. They were all a bit grimy and sticky and the wiping made them look and smell a lot better. My favourite find of the evening was an old-school telephone with eyes and coloured balls in the wheels. What was yours?

Steaming ahead!

The other runners were steaming ahead with the steam cleaner. After setting it up they got to work cleaning the toys that contain fabric and upholstery. It's not often you hear "Just hold the baby up by it's head and look away" anywhere near a toddlers group!

Liftin' lino

At the end of the task, we tidied the 'cleaning arena' and helped Paul roll up the lino mat he had put down for us. We had a brief chance to choose our favourite toy for the photograph and then we were on our way, rolling back to the leisure centre like a steam train!

Thanks!

Thanks a lot to Paul for taking time out of his evening to accommodate us for this task. Thanks to Rachel for backmarking for us and thanks to Emily for the pun this week!

Toy Story 4: The clean-up

Tuesday 11th June 2019

Written by Emma H

HURRAH THE RAIN STOPPED JUST IN TIME FOR OUR RUN!

After a wet and windy day we were all delighted to get out and run during a break in the bad weather. Alison welcomed everyone then, after a quick warm up and headcount, we were speeding through Bath city centre on our way to Oldfield Baptist Church.

Our host, Paul, had laid out piles of toys from the toddler group that needed a bit of TLC. Allie, Mary and Chris L gallantly volunteered to be on dishwasher duty, and Pascale used the steamer, while the rest of the group armed themselves with spray and cloths.

Once everything was sparkling clean we helped roll up the lino and made our way back to the leisure centre.

Thanks for all your efforts tonight everyone!

We never run out of steam!

Tuesday 22nd January 2019

Written by Bath runner

It was a chilly evening in Bath but that didn't stop a fantastic force of 19 runners coming out to help clean toys at Oldfield Park Toddler Group.

We welcomed Chris, on tour from GoodGym Bristol, and Andreea who has joined Bath from GoodGym Hounslow.

After a quick warm up we ran out to Oldfield Park Baptist Church, where our host Katie was waiting to meet us with a huge pile of toys which needed cleaning. This has become a regular half-term task for us, as we can get the work done in 30 minutes whereas it takes the church volunteers at least a day! We split into two teams and got to work!

Esme, Chris, Katrin and Dora were the dishwasher team, who took care of all the small plastic items, including building blocks and an interesting array of plastic food, including a very realistic Pringle! We had to send in back up as there were so many small toys to dry and we ended up leaving some very soggy tea towels behind!

The rest of our mean, clean running machine took care of the larger items, using cloths and anti-bacterial spray to give everything a wipe down. Tom left his Maths PhD behind and went old school with an abacus, Dan resumed construction of the castle he built on a previous visit and Pascale was let loose with the steam cleaner to clean up some softer, squishy items! Tim even grew a tail?!

After cleaning up and a quick group photo, it was off on the run again and back to the Leisure Centre. Thanks to Pascale for back marking this week. Emily had to come up with the pun and can only apologise for lack of originality. We need a replacement pun-master while Joe is injured!

Happy running!

Don't throw your toys out of the pram - GoodGym is here!

Tuesday 23rd October 2018

Written by Bath runner

Running into the sunset, 10 runners ran 5km to Oldfield Park Baptist Church to clean toys for the toddler group while the children are away for half term!

As usual we started our run at the leisure centre, noticing how sadly, head torch and hi-vis season has finally come after our fantastic summer! Another new runner joined us this week!

Welcome to Esme!

After a steady run out to Oldfield Park, with a stop on route to admire the amazing sunset over our beautiful city, we met Mark, the church pastor, who was ready and waiting with the toys for us to clean. What is usually several hours work for Mark and his team takes our GoodGym runners around 40 minutes, so he is always very glad to see us!

Kiran, Cassie, Tim, Dan and Joe started in the main hall wiping down larger toys including a mini-kitchen, bikes, trains and even a fantastic toy castle (masterfully assembled by Dan). With Sam joining us at the task, the group managed to get all the toys cleaned and put back in the boxes before we left.

Esme, Allie and Chris were in the kitchen putting smaller items such as building blocks and plastic food into the dishwasher. These then had to be removed, dried and put back into the boxes. Despite the dishwasher creating a rather steamy, sauna-like environment, the team pushed on and managed to get everything cleaned!

Thanks to Kiran for back-marking tonight and apologies for butchering Kiran's pun!

Happy Birthday to us!

This week, GoodGym Bath is turning 3! That's 3 whole years of doing good deeds in our local community. To celebrate, we are going to our usual end of the month pub quiz at The Boater - join us from 7pm for food/drink and 8pm for the quiz. Sign up here so I can reserve some tables!

Toy that was hot tonight

Tuesday 22nd May 2018

Written by Bath runner

Tonight’s sunny 6k run took 15 Goodgym runner out to Oldfield Baptist Church to clean toys ready for the new term for the community toddler group.

A few announcements and cheers before heading out there with a right Royal headcount.

Congratulations to Emma

50 Good deeds and a chance to wear the black wings of Thunder in preparation for the arrival of her stealth black T-Shirt... Well Done!Emma.

Welcome to a couple of new faces tonight Chloe and Laura

Happy Birthday GG Cardiff 1 today...Hip Hip!!

We needed two volunteers to take tonight’s shorter run to finish painting railings at St Marks Community centre under the watchful eye of Alex who is our task host on that one.

Thanks to Mary and Pascale for stepping up to the challenge and I’m pleased to say completed in true Goodgym style.

The remaining 13 opted for the longer run and indoor task that was a guaranteed whole lotta fun from start to finish, if not a trip down memory lane at the very least.

Hello Sharon our host

We split into two groups this evening with the larger group clean/sterilise all the toys in the main hall, whilst a smaller group took the little hand to mouth objects like plastic food into the kitchen to run them through the dishwasher. Once clean everything had to be put back into the relevant boxes and off into the storage cupboard ready for the new term in June.

30 minutes of action packed fun

A nice run back along the riverbank to really shake off any end of day stresses before arriving back to base. we even had a little educational look at the flood lines by the river.

Chloe completed her first ever 6k run tonight in hot conditions...Amazing Work!!

We have a Sunday run this weekend to Bath City Farm, another chance to add to your good deeds https://www.goodgym.org/happenings/a-sunday-run-to-bath-city-farm-06eaea6d-a0c9-4f8e-b1fd-47f87a5577d6
