Burning the Wicker at both arches, It's a Litter Sweet Symphony

Sheffield Report written by Tom Mutton

Thanks to James for tonights puntastic title, you really are a true pun master James!

This week we were back to meet with Karen and Malcolm to help them with the constant battle against litter in the area. We met at the Wicker arches and walked up to meet Malcolm who was waiting on Spital Hill with pickers, hoops and grabbers in hand.

We got straight to work picking away and there was plenty to go at. Some choice items were found including:

  • Car parts
  • A single shoe
  • Underpants

All that litter(s) is was indeed not gold (thanks again James).

After a good session with plenty of bags collected we headed back via the spider bridge to channel our inner spiders by getting low and squat wadlling our our way across this very atmospheric feature. After this we took in the lumps and bumps outside Ponds Forge International swimming pool and finished with stretching and soup!

What a way to spend your valentines day eh, lovely! We also had a birthday tonight, so we all wished LOVELY LINDA a happy birthday, hope you had a lovely day Linda!

Until next time, happy running :)

Brushing Up On Our Picking Up Skills

Sheffield Report written by Tom Mutton

First off big props have to go to Kat for this reports incredible Run Report title! Great work Kat!

This week saw the welcome return of Tom of Tom & Annie fame who after a move and a marriage came back and we welcomed him with open arms.

We also saw first time GG runner Keira introduced to the group via Rachel. A big welcome to Keira and we hope we see you again soon!

This week we were back off to the good ol Durham Ox to meet with SUSTRANS volunteer and all round great guy Craig Malkin who does a huge amount for cycling in the city including his volunteering with Sustrans. Craig was super organized with all tools laid out perfectly for us to see and gave a really good, to the point brief so we could get straight to it. Most of us stayed near the Ox and got to litter picking, sweeping the path clear, collecting up leaves and looping back overgrowth.

A secondary, small team of us headed to the underpass near by to do a quick clear of the drains to ensure the cycle path doesn't ice over in the winter from the draining water nearby. We also did a quick litter pick, glass clear and some lopping and chopping, hip hopping and body dropping.

After a good session polishing the ox we popped tools down and headed for home via the Ponds Forge steps for a quick 1-2-squat for a couple of rounds. Next up came the Beatles lunge across the Zebra crossings at the bus station (poor bus driver) and finally we got a hill sprint in up Howard street which is a known Strava segment that is always too busy to have a crack at in the day.

After stretching off we headed inside for some drinks and cheeky child's portions of veg chili (you know who you are).

Until next week, happy running! :)

I totally claim the cheeky child chili dinner. I'm sized like a child therefore I should have access to it! Thanks for the great report Tom!

Return to Regather - Prepping for Mushrooms!

Sheffield Report written by Tom Mutton

Not all hero's wear capes, but last nights did!

It was SENSATIONAL STEVE'S 500th good deed last night! Massive respect! Steve has been coming to GG since nearly the very start and has been consistently contributing in numerous ways to the growth of the group and it's community. Steve has been visiting his coach for a number of years and continues to support them today. Thank you for all of you help and contribution Steve!

At the other end of the GG time line we had Robert joining us for his first run. Please click through on Robert's name above to support him and give him some cheers! Hope to see you again soon Robert and thanks to Lan for introducing him to the group.

This week saw the return to Regather, an old friend of GG SHF where a couple of our runners, Serge and Becky work. The task was a great one where we were helping Gareth, Becky and Serge to empty their full to the brim basement of various items that had been used in the past for their events around the city which over the last couple of years have had to cease. In true adapt and overcome fashion the Regather crew have come up with a new use for the space and plan to grow mushrooms in the basement that will go into their fantastic fruit and veg boxes.

After forming a human chain and emptying the contents to another storage space down the road, we aid our farewells and headed for home but not without some leg killers on the way. This week we paired up and used a well lit underpass for some leggy action. One person wall sat, whilst the other sprinted up a ramp and down some stairs and tagged their partner to swap. We did three round and then headed closer to home.

When closer to The Showroom we used some concrete steps for another quick leg killer that involved 4 steps so we did 4 squat jumps on each followed by a step up or a box jump up to the next level. Killer!

The photos attached tell some great stories of last night but also this month with a great effort and result in the January challenge. Thanks to all who have contributed and continue to do so.

Until next time, happy running! :)

Well done Susan, Kim and everyone in Sheffield for winning Group K of the January challenge. In Tower Hamlets, we needed a 21-person turn-out to overtake Southwark. We got 22 but you lot sneaked in to the top with this 28-strong Group Run!

Picking & Flicking down by the Riverside

Sheffield Report written by Tom Mutton

On a cold and crisp Sheffield eve 13 brave runners headed out to help litter pick on and around Chatham St down by the Riverside pub (good pub).

Even before arriving we could see in the distance, up the hill a waving litter bag which was held by MARVELOUS MARTIN and COURTEOUS KAREN, who welcomed us and gave us our instructions for the eve which was to litter pick around a triangular area and then head up ROCK St to clear as much as we could up there.

We grabbed pickers and bags and got to rocking and rolling, moving and shaking, picking and flicking!

Amongst the usual items, we also found some choice items, including:

  • An unopened can of Irn Bru
  • A rusty saw
  • A kitchen knife
  • A broken bike lock
  • Various items of clothes (enough to make an art piece out of)
  • A water pistol
  • Parts of a car

Once we had done what we could in the time we had, we headed back to where we started to leave a number of brimming bags, ready for the council to collect. We said our goodbyes to the team and headed in the direction of home.

On route back we stopped by some lovely lit blocks for a bit of a fitness Bloc Party! We got paired up and whilst one person sprinted around the outside of the blocks, their partner completed a block based exercise and then we switched. This week we focused on:

  • Step Ups/Box Jumps
  • Squat Jumps
  • Press Ups

Once back we got stretched off and headed into The Showroom for some refreshments.

Until next time, happy running :)
