Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
It was wonderful to return to one of Goodgym Islington's longest running community missions after a short break over Summer! We had some regulars returning to Crouch End Open Space and the forest paths between Highgate and Muswell Hill (including ever present John and Friends of CREOS Guro and Nicolas), with new starters like Erayna.
Tasks on offer today involved moving some newly cut down tree stumps across the woodland (to be used to dead hedging and creating barriers around wild flower patches), and trimming away the overgrown tree branches surrounding the forest paths. Area Activator Simon also assisted with litter picking around the green fields near the local school yards, while Nic did a smashing job with weed whacking with a petrol driven strimmer!
Wonderful work everyone, Thank you for joining us!

We had a full house for sign-ups for our group run and session at St Mungo's Hilldrop House this evening! Area Activator Simon met up with a lovely crew of runners outside the Arsenal Community Hub on Benwell Road this evening (including new starters Giulia, Claire and Michelle- welcome!). Together, we engaged in a warm up on the slopes surrounding the Emirates Stadium, and discussed our favourite "summertime drinks" as part of our count off (I believe Pimms, Sparkling English white wine and Victoria's incredible homemade cocktails were the most popular options!). From here, we ran approximately 1.4 miles over to Holloway Road, past the Cat 🐱 and Mouse 🐁 Library, and up Camden Road.
Upon our arrival, we were met with more of our North London team outside Hilldrop House. St Mungo's is a charity and care home for vulnerable men suffering from homelessness, and a safe hub for those afflicted by alcoholism and mental health issues. The crew who operate the service have been extremely busy, and do not have the resources to maintain the gardens, pathways and greenery surrounding the property. This is where Goodgym Islington stepped in to help out!
We picked up secateurs, clippers, brushes, rakes, garden forks and bags from the main reception, and spent about 45 minutes on renovating the green space for the residents of the centre. Our tallest runners (Alex and Victoria) helped with clipping away some overgrown tree branches around the main entrance to Hilldrop House. Emily and Guro took on litter picking duty, and cleared multiple bags of rubbish in a short amount of time (Camden Road is a wind trap for rubbish being blown across town). Josh, Katie, Francesca and Alison did a smashing job of clearing troublesome vines, weeds, invasive bushes and thorns from the surrounding plant beds at Hilldrop House.
We really made an incredible different in such a short amount of time- it really shows how much can be achieved with efforts of many over the course of an hour. Congratulations all!

4 Goodgymers attended the monthly Crouch End Open Space (CREOS) session to help the local volunteers. When I arrived, Guro was already hard at work clearing sticks and leaves from the trenches alongside the footpath. I joined her and together we managed to clear at least 10 bags worth (though we lost count). Around the corner Caitlin took part in various tasks including building a very impressive wall of sticks, to keep people out of the woods. Nico was moving logs from the cricket ground which sounded pretty challenging as he had to avoid hitting rogue children.
As usual the lovely volunteers put on a great picnic of homemade quiche, bread and cheeses (Guro is pictured protecting the quiche from a hungry dog).

On a wonderfully warm Monday evening, Area Activator Simon met up with Toyo, Dominik, Alice, Alex, Katie and Josh at the Elizabeth House Food Hub- welcome to all of our runners going us for the first time! After a swift warm up, we ran approximately 2.2 miles along Gillespie Park Nature Reserve (a lesser known wildlife trail towards Finsbury Park underground station) and up towards Crouch Hill.
Upon our arrival, we were greeted by Frannie from Octopus Community Network, and the rest of our crew who travelled directly to the task from work. Nicolas, Guro, David and Alex were already busy at work with "double digging" the flower beds in Trinity Church, Hornsey Rise (turning over older soil with fresh mulch to refresh the growing space).
The rest of our team picked up wheel barrows, shovels, rakes and hoes, and made our way to the Brickworks Community Centre down the road. From here, 4 of our team (Nikki, Katie, Louise and Emily) started filling up 3 wheelbarrows full of fresh mushroom compost, and delivered the mulch back to Trinity Church. During this time, our crew attempted to make our way into the Brickworks Community Centre to gain access to the upper garden level- this proved more difficult than expected!
Once Frannie had cracked the code, we made our way to the upper garden and collected as much compost and mulch as possible (using trolleys, lifts and careful carrying methods). We brought all the supplies outside, and spread the fresh fertilizer evenly across some lovely growing beds, designed to withstand a wind tunnel between tall buildings. We were even able to carry a super heavy compost bag between 4 of us, and made Frannie's day!
As we made our way to back to the church with our tools, we gave each other a well deserved pat on the back after a solid evening of graft, before we departed our separate ways. Great stuff, folks!

Guro Skei earned their community cape by completing their first community mission.
Guro completed a community mission. Instead of watching TV or lying in bed, Guro was out there making their community a better place to be. For making that choice they have earned the community cape.
