Maintaining the allotment in good condition ensures it's a great space for the local community to enjoy - many of whom don't have their own gardens or growing spaces.

We enjoyed something a little different this weekend with a combined task in Cambridge, welcoming GoodGymers from Tower Hamlets to join us at Fox Den Community Allotment.
Becky, Debbie and I met tourists Darren, John and Kareem at the station, where Darren led us in a mobility focused warm up before we set out for a jaunt to the allotment. Taking a scenic route along the river and across the common, we soon had the allotment in sight, and never one's to turn down a challenge Kareem and Darren even managed an impressive sprint finish. I hear there was a cap peak in it.
We were greeted by a smiley Harriet and shortly afterwards joined by Ilana and Brian, who all arrived by bike, in true Cambridge style. Helena and Jacob made it a perfect 11! Shout out to Brian and Helena who joined for their first GoodGym task 🙌
As always, we were warmly welcomed by task partner, Lorna, who told us the fascinating history of the allotment and their plans to develop a forest garden on site. These incredible ecosystems rely on established trees and bushes to create nutritious soil where mycelia thrive, allowing plants to communicate and support hydration. Eventually, after 20ish years (or 1000s of GG sessions) the garden becomes self-sustaining. 🌿
Helping towards the forest garden goal, our tasks for the session involved weeding, digging and some rather unusual pond work.
Making a start on the weeding Debbie, Harriet, Helena and Ilana split between the Hugel mounds (created in a previous GoodGym session) and did a smashing job of clearing the beds.
Jacob and Becky were in charge of transforming a previously cleared storage area into a bed ready for planting, by raking and turning the soil before soaking it. Proper hard graft 💪
The rest of the group were on pond duty. First up they removed the (empty!) body-shaped bag then trampled the greenery that had taken root, choosing an innovative dancing method. Like Morris dancers round a maypole, they stomped (and clapped) the grass flat, employing some jumping to finish it off. The pond then had to be filled with clay, which proved to be a proper strength workout with a lot of heavy lifting, never seen before by the Tower Hamlets group 🏋️♀️ Everyone got involved and even a toad came to say hi 🐸 With all the clay bags empty and the pond full, it was ready to be left for the rain, which will soften and level it, making it suitable to be tampered into shape. A task for another day.
In just one hour then area was transformed proving that ponderful things happen when GoodGymers come together. 💛
Feeling pretty spent, it was time for some refreshment, so we headed to the river for well-earned pizza and beers. Then, eager to make the most of time in Cambridge we went on a little tour, taking in the views from St Mary's tower (another workout climbing the 123 steps!), enjoying some tasty gelato from Jack's, and rounding off the day in the sunshine ☀️
A beautiful day, channelling true GoodGym spirit, doing good and connecting with others. We look forward to visiting Tower Hamlets for more of the same soon 🙌

GoodGymers where out in force this morning making events happen North and South of the the city.
Up in Northstowe, Becky and I were supporting Cambridge Acorn Project at Northstowe Running Festival by managing a water station on the half marathon route. We took a lovely cycle from Cambridge arriving with plenty of time to fill 100s of cups of water and master the fiddly job of setting up the rubbish sacks.
We had a great time handing out water and cheering on runners who were doing a fantastic job! The rain held off for a while, but about 2 hours in, it started pouring, with the cups filling themselves. Water, water everywhere (and a drop to share) 🌧️
We took cover while the worst passed and had even more respect for runners persevering in those difficult conditions. 💪
After a swift clear up, we headed to a local cafe to warm up with a much needed cup of tea ☕
Further south, Harriet and Caroline were reunited at Fulbourn Hospital parkrun, and were joined by Jacob to make a volunteer dream team. All went smoothly with Harriet as Run Director, supported by Jacob on timekeeping and Caroline on number checking. This new role for Caroline meant a new parkrun challenge badge 🎉 Aligning perfectly, there was plenty of cake to enjoy from parkrunner milestone celebrations. Yum!
Shout out to Scott who was representing GoodGym and in charge of pre-course checks at Coldham's Common parkrun last week when the sun was still shining ☀️

We got soaked! Saved by the cafe stop 😅 Very glad the rain held off for parkrun.

Jacob Morgan (he/him) earned their community cape by completing their first community mission.
Jacob completed a community mission. Instead of watching TV or lying in bed, Jacob was out there making their community a better place to be. For making that choice they have earned the community cape.
Monday 27th July

Jacob Morgan (he/him) has done their first good deed with GoodGym.
Jacob is a now a fully fledged GoodGym runner. They've just run to do good for the first time. They are out there making amazing things happen and getting fit at the same time.

When Maggie had a surprise grass cut at the church yard, she put the emergency call out and four super GoodGymers answered to help clear it 💪
Scott arrived off the back of a 10km training run, Harriet cycled across town, and both Jacob and myself being local, could take an easy stroll. Convening in the church yard, we welcomed Jacob to his first session 👋 Although a familiar face, it was great to have him join a task!
We were met by Chris, who is a pro at grass clearing, having been involved for a number of years and sometimes clearing 8 lots a year! From first glance there didn't seem to be much grass, but it didn't take long to realise there was plenty to be collected!
We raked and chatted, catching up on fine dining experiences, The Odyssey and, of course, race training. We had a lovely little pause to meet a very cute pup who joined us in a bit of grass clearing, but was mainly interested in a bit of fuss, which we were all more than willing to give 🐶
It's warm work, so the refreshment break was very welcome. Both elderflower and lime cordial on offer this week. We heard more from Maggie and Chris about the Churchyard Conservation Awards, which support parishes to protect biodiversity. St Andrew's is going for Silver, which requires active management including wildflower areas, wildlife information boards, animal boxes and clearing of grass cuttings.
Within an hour we had cleared 3 large bags of cuttings 😅 With the judges coming in the next few weeks, we were glad to be able to help. Good luck 🙌
