High energy, positive vibes and a big impact - it's all in a night's work at GoodGym Westminster!
It was amazing to welcome members of North Paddington Youth Club to our session last night. Waleed, MJ and Husan have all been making some incredible stuff happen, from foodbank collections, to walking cricket for the elderly, big cleans ups and more. Why not check out upcoming sessions and join them?
We also gave a big welcome to Vita who came along to her very first group run - great to meet you Vita!
We met up in a busy Hyde Park with no sign of the predicted storm, and found a place away from the army of bikes streaming in for our warm up. We tested our brains as well as muscles which was a challenge - and resulted in some 'interesting' high fives! After a quick discussion about our chosen super power (super strength rated very highly, although you all already seem to have that) we set off for the task.
The Abbey Centre in Victoria is an important resource for local people, offering support in the form of hot food, legal advice, somewhere warm, therapy and classes. Our job was outside in the garden, so we made our way through the building and divided up the jobs.
Laura and Catarina got straight in making sandwiches for rough sleepers, Waleed, MJ and Hussan grabbed gloves and cleared the weeds (I think that geranium survived!), Kush gave everything a good water, Ciaran and Vita were in charge of clearing and sweeping, Emma and Lydia were on banister and fire escape duty, while Jacob worked with photographer Simon to capture some fantastic shot for the evening. You can see the whole gallery here - what a lot of happy, energetic faces!
Before long the jobs were done and the place was transformed - brilliant work everybody. That wasn't all though - there was just enough time for a fitness challenge which saw us test our balancing skills. Turns out they were very impressive, even when I threw in a few dynamic exercises to test you all! We finished off the night with a leg burner in the form of a progressive squat.
While some of us went for a delicious curry, others opted to add a few miles, and we also managed to catch the Under One Sky Team to hand over the carefully prepared sandwiches. They had run out of food to hand out to rough sleepers, so we were there in the nick of time!
Great to see you all last night, thanks for all the effort and smiles. We run as a group every single Tuesday in Westminster at the same time. Next week we're off to the oldest youth club in the world to help out - would love to see you there!

It was great to meet everyone yesterday! Thanks for leading the warmup, run and fitness challenge - the exercises definitely kept me on my toes (pun intended 😂). Such a fun and worthwhile way to spend a slightly chilly Tuesday evening - the photos definitely capture the stellar vibes throughout!

Last night was our regular session to pick up lovely food that would otherwise be thrown away and get it to the people who can distribute it into the community.
There are always a few unknowns with this task, but it never fails to have a net positive effect. We don't always know if the cafes are going to still be open and how much food they'll have left to give away. Last night it looked as if it might have been a bit of a light haul, but in the world of GoodGym you never know what good things are round the corner!
I met Laura with an armful of bread just about being held together in a very wet soggy bag. She rescued the goodies just before they hit the pavement and we went off for our first drop.
Locating the UOS team without too much bother, we picked up a variety of big sturdy bags - not knowing just how useful they were going to be!
We arrived at Pret just before they were closing and had a few minutes to wait until the manager let us know what we could take with us to pass on to the rough sleepers. We couldn't quite believe it when we we were finally shown just how much they had for us. More sandwiches, soups, rolls, salads and pastries than we could shake a bread stick at!
We weren't totally sure we could fit it in the bags, but with some strategic packing we managed to get it all in and set off for the queue of people waiting for their evening meal. On the walk we tried to work out just how much the haul we were transporting would be worth, and calculated it was at least a few hundred quid - thank you so much Pret! The impact this short task has is huge. Saving good food from being thrown away and at the same time feeding vulnerable people - what could be better?
Next week we're off to a community garden in central London to give it a bit of GG love - all welcome!

Great to see Dan for his first Westminster task last night - welcome to our regular task rescuing food that would otherwise been thrown away and transporting it to Under One Sky who then hand it out to rough sleepers!
We joined up with Laura at the first of our three stops that evening, before heading off to collect all the goodies from the second bakery.
After loading ourselves up with flaky, crumbly goodness that would have tragically otherwise ended up in the bin, we made our way to Under One Sky.
Eagle eyed Dan spotted them immediately, so we quickly divested ourselves ready for our next pick up. It was great to have chance to chat as we waited at Pret, and the range of topics was fabulously diverse! From jousting, to learning Russian, to spaghetti westerns and the joys of stubborness, we covered it all.
Three bags of food later, we met up with Under One Sky one last time to hand over our haul. A job well done!

Another Tuesday night collecting food for for rough sleepers, another massive haul of sandwiches, rolls, bread and baked goods!
First stop was the bakery who gave us masses of pastries and fresh bread, a quick pit stop to hand it over and then it was pret for huge sacks of food! We chatted about all the important things- mud larking, the hidden language of emojis and how to fashion the perfect handle on a bin bag! A great evening with a bug impact
