It was the first of our monthly trips to help out at Doddington community roof garden last night, and after a brief discussion about whether it was going to snow or not at the beginning of the night, little did we know what we really should have been ready for...the rain. Cold, wet rain....
Still, it didn't hold us back. We did our warm up and had a quick discussion on food we can't stand which included all the classics - mushrooms, beetroot, and anchovies. After a 2km run down to the garden we arrived and Malissa quickly went through all the jobs that needed to be done. The joy of coming back on a regular basis is that we can see the garden evolve and grow, we start to know the tasks that need to be done and when, and we can really see the difference we are making.
The main job was digging so we divided up into groups to tackle the removal of soil so that when the compost arrives this weekend it can go straight in. If you fancy a great upper body work out and massively helping out at the garden, then on Saturday morning at 11am we have a massive task carrying up no fewer than 800 bags of compost donated by the council. Hope to see as many as possible of you there!
Meanwhile, there were several other tasks being completed elsewhere, including giving a buddleia bush a good pruning, moving several plants in the St John's Wort family, and spreading woodchip. We also moved many, many trugs - more of a challenge than we had expected given they had no handles and the rain made them really slippery.
By this point we had achieved a lot but we were thoroughly wet and becoming uncomfortably chilly so we decided to call it a night. We were determined not to finish without any fitness at all though, so Sophie led the group in a token squat session before we headed off.
Some of us went on to do a fun pub quiz where very weirdly two separate GG teams ended up with the exact same score of 103 points, coming joint third. That's a little sprinkling of GG magic right there.
Next week the task is yet to be confirmed but we will be having a session as normal so watch this space. Have a great week GoodGym, and stay warm!

Last night 15 GoodGymers came together to celebrate SIX whole years of GoodGym Wandsworth! In that time we have achieved huge things together. Can you believe we have clocked up:
8456 good deeds done by 1109 runners
634 Missions to help older people
533 Group sessions to help community projects
711 Coach visits to an older person
118401 kms run
45729 cheers given
What an amazing legacy...so far! Well done to each and everyone of you who has been a part of it.
We kicked off the evening with a warm up and we were very happy to welcome Amy to her first session - give her a cheer!
Last night's task was at a local community centre where we were replanting flowers that had been donated by Wimbledon Tennis charitable foundation. But first there was a spot of digging to do. Well, that's what we thought at first. It didn't take long for us to realise that the area where we were going to be doing the planting was filled with some rather stubborn roots. However, we were not to be defeated and after some epic battles we were victorious over some of the biggest and toughest roots in Wandsworth.
It wouldn't be a GG Wandsworth party without a bit of compost, so true to form, we shifted and spread many bags of the stuff ready for the plants, some of which looked like they were more than ready to find a new home!
Next came the creative part, and with several of us assuming art director roles we began designing the new bed. Alan Titchmarsh would be proud - check out some of those before and after shots to see the massive difference.
Job done, and it was time for Chi to put the group through their paces with a short but hard core fitness session- although there may have been a relaxed attitude towards the timings (!), it was an effective all over body session which meant everybody was ready for the post-task celebration. And what a celebration it was! Hadas, who runs the Waste Not Want Not charity put on the most incredible spread, with a huge BBQ of jerk chicken, as well as loads of other goodies. There was also some incredible baked goods created by you lovely lot, including an amazing cake made by Catherine.
It's such a pleasure to run with you all, and to see the amazing way you make things happen for the better across the borough and beyond. A very happy birthday to each and every one of you and here's to many more years of GoodGym Wandsworth!

We were full of the joys of Spring last night in Wandsworth. Not only did we have a brand new task for our session, but we also got to welcome Rebecca to her very first GoodGym run! Plus it was still light, there was blossom in the air and loads of fun events to look forward to so we had lots of reasons to celebrate!
After a quick warm up anda round of the London Bridge challenge where we tried to name all of the foot bridges crossing the Thames, we set off for Sacred Heart school for one huge task.
We soon arrived to meet Jared, the headteacher, who gave us our instructions. It quickly became clear that this was going to be no mean feat. But were we chicken? Were we cluck! The job was to clear an area at the school that had been used for keep chickens and pigs and then to give it a dig over. We had plenty of tools at our disposal, and even more energy, so we got cracking.
While some of us took down the fence and clipped wire, others began the digging (even some of the forks were no match for our muscle power!), and dismantling the huge chicken coop. Meanwhile Annabel and Adam began an epic battle of Human V Pig Pen. Several techniques were used to defeat the beast, including crow barring, ripping off pieces with bare hands, sawing, and a lying-down-kicking manoeuvre. With the clock ticking down, we were into the final few minutes before victory was achieved and pen was defeated. Amazing job. With everybody working super hard last night, the result is some pretty brilliant before and after shots - check out the photos! Next week we'll be back to finish off the job.
With all that effort and hardwork, we didn't have time for our usual fitness session, so we'll save that fun for next week. There's plenty to get involved in, with a lunchtime mission on Friday at a local homeless centre, plus our upcoming Easter social. You can also sign up for next week's run here. Have a happy week GoodGym!

The sheer amount of donations the centre is receiving is overwhelming, as well as the huge numbers of people from all backgrounds who are coming to get stuck in. Everyone is pulling together to work as quickly and efficiently as possible to try and sort everything out and get it back out the door. What an amazing sense of community at such a difficult time. They will definitely need as much help as they can get so check out the times and get down there if you can! There's a cloakroom, toilets, hot and cold food, and a variety of drinks to keep you going.

'Tis the season for leaves and we had a great group down in Wandsworth tonight up for the challenge of clearing a local community garden. Rakes, brooms and giant flipper style scoopers were out in force and before long we had used up all the bags given to us! A great excuse for a spot of fitness while we waited for more bags to arrive... thanks guys for your exercise ideas to keep us busy!
Four rolls of bags later (seriously, check out that pile!!) and we could definitely call it a successful night's work. Only thing left to do was embrace the season and literally fall into the leaves as demonstrated by Oliver who also performed some wizardry on our photos making it look like the summer evenings we miss!
Well done Wandsworth and a particular shout out to Catrin for a first Goodgym appearance - we hope to see you again soon!
