Beach De-Construction

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Jess Smith

Tonight’s GoodGym mission in Maidenhead was a sandy one! While beach cleans aren’t exactly common around here, this one came with a twist—we weren’t cleaning the beach, we were removing it.

A couple of months ago, we helped create the pop-up beach for Norden Farm’s summer festivities. But with autumn creeping in and flip-flops firmly back in storage, it was time to bid farewell to the sandpit!

Shifting 13 tonnes of sand is no small feat—and definitely tougher than laying it out in the first place! But the GoodGym crew rose to the challenge. With teamwork, grit, and sandy socks, we helped the Norden Farm staff make a serious dent in the dunes. There’s still a bit left to tackle, but the bulk of the beach has officially been packed away.

Litter Picking puns are all a bit Rubbish so I won't Dump another Trashy one on you!

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Jess Smith

🦸‍♀️ Six litter-picking superheroes assembled at the community centre, ready to take on the challenge of tidying up the streets and parks of Maidenhead.

Armed with picks and hoops, we set off towards the station—a gentle stroll to warm up our eyes for the litter lurking ahead. From the station, we swooped into the High Street, scooping up mountains of cigarette butts and rogue takeaway cups.

Tony and Mike veered off down a side-street, while Sheila, Sarah, Jess, and Viv took the more direct route. Everyone found a few treasures, but the general consensus? The town centre was looking far tidier than on previous missions.

We were met with cheerful “Thank you!”s from passers-by, and even roped in a spontaneous participant for a race to a paper cup. He won—and his prize? The honour of binning it himself!

With the town centre sparkling, we ventured into Kidwells Park. Here, the litter was more plentiful, and our bags filled up fast. After an hour of heroic effort, we regrouped at the community centre to compare hauls and swap stories.

A job well done—and a wonderfully chatty, cheerful task to boot!

Who's at the door?

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

Another busy morning at the Baby Bank. 4 of us were put on the dreaded door duty - answering the door and accepting donations and handing out referral packs to the health professional requester. We were kept extremely busy, checking that donated prams, cots etc met all the safety standards and had the correct bits and pieces before we could accept them. We got our steps in carrying clothes and toy donations upstairs for checking. Everyone rose to the challenge and we all learnt much more about what can be accepted and also how to collapse modern prams! Sheila A was also put in charge of the referral phone for the first time, checking off when referrals were ready for collection, where they had been put, and when they had been collected. Rebecca and Lauren were extremely grateful for our help, freeing them up to do other things Sarah was upstairs - sorry, I didn't get a chance to catch-up with what you were doing, but I'm sure it was mega!

We certainly were kept busy with donators turning up with car and van loads of stuff. Big learning curve knowing what to accept and what to turn down. Phew!

'That's too Bobbly'

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

It was another busy Friday at the Baby Bank. Six GoodGymers joined other regular volunteers plus a large group from a local company on a Social Responsibility Day. While Sarah was putting together referral packs for families, the others got on with sorting clothes. It was first time that Sheila K, Carol and Helen had been given this task but with help from old hands Carol and Sheila A, they quickly got to grips with ensuring that nothing got through that was dirt, too worn or too bobbly. We want to treat the recipient families with respect and only give them good quality clothes and equipment. Huge kudos to Sheila K for running all the way there - and all the way back!

Quality Control

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

Today at the Baby Bank we were all on clothes-checking duty and/or preparing referrals. Rebecca gave us all a reminder talk on the need to remain vigilant to ensure that no poor quality garments get through the checking process. Unfortunately many of the donations are dirty, too worn or zips don't work, and the Baby Bank prides itself on only giving out good quality clothes. I think we were all extra-picky for the rest of the session

Busy Friday

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

As ever, the Baby Bank had a busy morning. Mark was in the Toy Room putting together toy packs for different age groups. I didn't catch up with Sarah, but I presume she was clothes -sorting. Meanwhile Carys and Sheila were downstairs answering the door, and getting to grips with which items we can and cannot accept, and checking that incoming cots and buggys had all the bits and pieces and were fit for purpose. I think we were all a bit frazzled by the end of the morning!
