On a bright sunny Monday evening, six intrepid GoodGymers convened at the Silver Road Community Centre and met Julie, the Sewell councillor and Silver rooms head honcho – who needed help with gardening and upkeep of the silver rooms – an important community centre in the heart of NR3.

Like so many community centres in the current climate, Silver Road Community Centre has remained closed throughout the lockdown period and has suffered badly from signs of neglect as a consequence.

After a briefing and exchanging pleasantries with Julie BC, Bryony, George and Kathyrn were quickly tasked with rejuvenating the wall planters and hanging baskets in the back courtyard – refreshing and breathing new life with an array of violas and pansies and cottage flowers and trailing plants.

Whilst this was going on, Robert was charged with duties out the front (Bobby and Jonathan arriving later!). Over the last few months weeds had started to take up residence in the vicinity but the weeds didn't reckon on the men and women in red turning up that’s for sure!

As local volunteers had earlier been trimming all the surrounding hedges – Robert began to diligently tidy up the area. Bobby and Jonathan enthusiastically set about sorting things and weeding out the front of the building - in doing so gradually restoring the centre to its former glory.

In the second half of the mission, the team all reunited out the front armed with brooms and with their bin bags flailing commenced a positive and fun sweep and clean. Robert and Bobby seemed to get particularly excited sparking a frenzied broom-off. Kathryn was mightily impressed by this show of masculinity. Meanwhile Bryony and George tended to the flower beds.

The hour (as always) went all so quickly. Julie popped out and seemed really happy with the work done and we all agreed that the Silver rooms was starting to look well lived in again!! After a few grabbed photo opportunities to seal another great community mission, the six GoodGymers bade farewell and charged back up Silver road into the good night (leaving Bobby to do up his shoelaces).

Thank you Julie for having us and see you again soon.
