Trees under three years old need plenty of moisture around their roots to keep growing, so the 300 saplings forming a new hedgerow in Ladywell Fields were not going to survive this week’s extreme dry weather without help. Equipped with buckets, ropes and river-dipping skills, a team of local volunteers, joined by GoodGymers Joseph and Linda, used water from the Ravensboure – a tributary of the Thames – to pour around the trunks. A 1000 litre water bowser and hose were also supplied by Lewisham council to make the task easier. Thanks to the team’s environmental heroism, the thirsty hedgerow will continue to become greener and stronger, capturing carbon to help mitigate climate change and adding to the beauty of the park.
