Making a splash at the MAC Easter Ten

Friday 29th March

Written by Amy L (she/her)

Water fun morning at the Easter Ten mile 6 water station! I was joined by GoodGymers Sheila, Kate, Georgeta, Kelley, and Rosie.

My family also came along, with the under 18 year olds volunteering as part of Maidenhead Athletic Club rather than as GoodGymers.

There is some debate as to whether the rubber duck was with GoodGym or MAC. Maybe both?

After a stormy night we expected a wet morning but the sun came out and spirits were far from damp. We set up our bunting and GoodGym signs to brighten up our lay-by, poured water into hundreds of cups and then waited eagerly for the first runners to come through.

The elites set a mind blowing 5 minute mile pace. No time for them to stop for water but we gave them a big cheer.

Gradually more and more runners did take up our offers of hydration though and we were kept busy handing out cups and kudos.

It was great to see lots of familiar faces running by including GoodGymer Sophie, a couple of GoodGym T-Shirts from other areas, some MAC members and the super pacers, wearing the bibs we made last week.

The young MAC volunteers did a great job collecting discarded cups, and the duck did some cheering too.

Thanks to Kelley, who had her fancy camera and took most of these photographs.

GoodGymer Gillian also helped at a water station with the Running Sisters and has submitted her own report.

Well done GoodGym and thanks to Run Director Jen and all of MAC for welcoming us to this brilliant community event. Can't wait for next year! Happy Easter everyone!

Ready, steady, bake!

Thursday 28th March

Written by Amy L (she/her)

Well done to Juli, Rachel, Sheila, Sophie and Tessa!

They got a workout on Thursday by energetically chopping ingredients like apples and chocolate, beating eggs, mixing batter and piping icing to stock up the refreshment stall at the Easter Ten race.

Their efforts gave a boost to many a hungry runner or supporter, and raised funds for local charities Thames Hospice, The Link Foundation and Alzheimers and Dementia Support.

Great work bakers!

Sew good! Sew good! Sew good!

Monday 18th March

Written by Amy L (she/her)

I've got sew much material for this report...sew many puns to string seamlessly together! But I mustn't lose the thread, so let's cut to the chase.

This year Maidenhead Athletic Club (MAC) are introducing pacers at their Easter 10 race, and they needled help with making their pacer bibs. Thanks to RD Jen for reaching out to GoodGym!

With my MAC hat on, I was task owner and Tessa, Anna, Gillian and Sheila met me at the Maidenhead Community Centre to lend a hand.

Laura, Tessa and Sheila traced and cut out numbers - all 36 of them, plus 24 dots for colons - and helped keep track of how many 1s, 5s and 0s were needed. These three are a cut above - they did a sheariously great job.

Gillian was on ironing duty - ironic since she refuses to iron at home! She smoothed out all the bibs and set out and ironed on the numbers with the help of a damp tea towel. She was working flat out!

Sheila helped with number placement too by chalking lines on the bibs so all the numbers would be in the right place.

My job was to zig zag around the edges of the numbers to keep them secure so they can be reused year after year. I completed 4 bibs during the session, although made some school girl errors, which needed to be corrected at home later - oops. At least I had a few people in stitches!

The remaining 8 bibs were shared out between me, Sheila, Tessa and Georgeta for more zig zag action at home. We were delighted to have Georgeta join the team remotely as she is an award winning quilter. No school girl errors from her!

It was sew satisfying to get sew much done at pace, and the bibs look great! Hopefully they will help lots of runners hit their target times in the ten mile race next week.

Well done team!

Helping MAC Blossom for the Summer Season

Wednesday 26th April 2023

Written by Jess Smith

10 GoodGymers met at Homebase car park ready for their session helping Maidenhead Athletics Club (MAC) hop, skip and jump into the summer season by sprucing up their track.

We welcomed newcomer Alice for her first session and Amy 'long-jumped' straight in to brief the group on the evening's plan - a walk/run to the MAC track, a track session with Head Coach Leila (and taskowner) and then onto the planned tasks.

The group split with walkers Clara, Rachel, Kate, Jen and Jess heading straight off and runners Alice, Amy, Amy, Georgeta and Juli doing a dynamic stretching session before making their way to the track too.

Once at the track Leila set the team an interval training challenge consisting of alternating 'easy' and 'hard' sections with a handy air horn to keep everyone in check! 20 minutes and many laps of the track later the team had given it a great 'shot-put' and some 'sprint' finshes had even been on show!

The team were now ready to be 'javelined' into the list of jobs Leila had. This consisted of edging and sweeping along the long jump track, raking the erroneous grass left from the recent mowing session, and raking over the long jump sandpit. The list was no 'hurdle' for the team and the long jump area was looking spick and span in no time with lots of 'discus-ions' about athletics, running, the weather and grass houses!

Amy even had time to make a GoodGym grass motif out of the edging waste which of course we all had an obligatory photo round! Another photo oppotunity could not be missed on the walk home under a beautiful blossom tree!

A cracking start to the Easter Weekend!

Friday 7th April 2023

Written by Amy L (she/her)

Well done to everyone who helped out at the Maidenhead Easter Ten race. The sun shone, we welcomed GoodGym Portsmouth to Maidenhead, we had a great time helping out, and we had lots of positive comments and smiles from runners.

Sheila, Diya and Kanika joined me in cycling to the water station at mile 6. We did important jobs like decorating the hedge with bunting and making the GoodGym logo out of water cups, and even more important jobs like cheering on and hydrating lots of runners and picking up all the cups and other litter.

Mark was also on water duty, joining Maidenhead's Running Sisters (including our Gillian!) on their busy station, which supports runners at miles 1, 3 and 9. Welcome to Maidenhead Mark! We can't promise to send our MP to greet you every time but we might be able to conjure up Gillian again .

Kelley and Kate were on marshal duty. Kelley saved the day by heroically stepping into the lead marshal role at the last minute, and Kate did whatever her big sister Jen told her to do, since Jen (also a GoodGymer) was the Race Director.

Eggcellent work team!

Cakes for runners!

Thursday 6th April 2023

Written by Amy L (she/her)

We know how much runners like cake, so we knew there would be loads of cake needed for the charity refreshment stall at the Maidenhead Easter 10. Well done to Juli, Amanda, Sheila and Jess, who joined me in baking some goodies. Dairy free chocolate rice crispie cakes, coconut flapjacks, pink fairy cakes topped with mini eggs, home grown rhubarb muffins and Juli's cup cakes decorated with the MAC colours - what a scrummy spread! Exactly what I would like to find at the end of every 10 mile run...
