Strawberry Fair

The Fair is free to enter, and it exists for the benefit of the local community

Strawberry Fair is Cambridgeโ€™s one-day celebration of music, arts, people and pure festival magic. Since 1974, over 30,000 people each year come together to enjoy a colourful celebration of creativity and community, bringing together performers, artists, families, friends and free spirits for one unforgettable day. Strawberry Fair returns for its 51st year and it's sure to be out of this world.

Hasty defence

Sunday 7th June

Written by Catherine

We had another great session supporting Strawberry Fair this weekend. This time taking down the fences we'd put up last week!

Welcoming Becky to her first GoodGym task ๐Ÿ‘‹ we met with Eva and headed over to the volunteer area to get kitted out. Still no left hand gloves to be found (where are they??) so we went with one glove each. To compensate, we had brand new shiny high vis jackets, which were so bright you couldn't miss us ๐Ÿฆบ

We certainly got our steps in working at 3 different locations across the site. First up was the Big Top where we were moving paint cans, tables and chairs ready for collection. The round tables were particularly tricky to manoeuvre with their wayward legs, but we managed it with some coordinated teamwork. We were then over at the soap box area moving wood planks into a storage compound. Again, not an easy task as they were tricky to balance! Lastly, the site team had already made an impressive start at removing over 4km of fencing, and we helped to take down some of the perimeter fencing. With Eva and Becky on fence panels and me on the bases, we made swift work of it and definitely felt like we'd had a good workout afterwards ๐Ÿ’ช

As we headed back to the volunteer tent, we noticed it had gone! After an initial panic, all was well and we found Kirsty and our belongings in the marquee. We returned our vests slightly less shiny than they started, a sign of some hard graft. ๐Ÿฆบ

See you again next year! ๐Ÿ“

It was a busy running weekend too.

๐Ÿ‘Ÿ On Saturday, Caroline signed up last minute to pace at Coldham's common parkrun, coming in right on time and helping runners reach their goals.

๐Ÿ…On Sunday, Scott got a PB at the Flaming June half marathon. After coming back from injury, this is a great achievement, well done ๐Ÿ™Œ

Fencetival ready

Wednesday 3rd June

Written by Catherine

GoodGymers were building character and fences this week as we supported the Strawberry Fair site team with the festival build.

Meeting volunteer coordinator, Kirsty, we donned our hi vis jackets and, after a tricky time matching hands to gloves, we were kitted out and ready to go. ๐Ÿฆบ ๐Ÿงค

We took a tour of the site, which is bigger than ever, requiring 1000s of metres of fencing. Getting our priorities straight, we got stuck in putting up protective fencing around generators and the bar. Taking the lead from Chris, who had definitely found his calling, we lifted and shifted A LOT of heavy bases and fence panels. Supported by the site team who supplied the panels on a forklift (which Caroline was very disappointed not to be able to drive) it was a real community effort. We had great fun working together as a slick operation and getting a proper strength workout ๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ

Despite being on the fence about photos, we captured some great shots of GoodGymers at work, and the team even made it onto the Strawberry Fair build video ๐ŸŽฅ (with two solo appearances from Scott โญ)

Before we left, the Strawberry Fair Comms team asked for a quick interview and Caroline did a fantastic job as the face of GoodGym Cambridge. ๐ŸŽฌ

Although timings didn't quite align for this session, it was great to meet Fufu and we look forward to seeing him at another session soon!

We go again Sunday to take it all down again ๐Ÿ’ช
