This week our group run was in partnership with This Girl Can's #LetsLiftTheCurfew campaign.
Now the clocks have changed the evenings are darker and this puts many women off exercising outside in the evenings as it can feel unsafe to do so.
GoodGym is a safe space to exercise outside in a friendly group throughout the winter months and so to spread the word, and encourage more women to join forces reclaim the streets at night, we decorated ourselves with bright lights ready for a colourful run around town on the way to our task.
We welcomed Arthur to his very first session with GoodGym and Luqman who had done a couple of community missions but hadn't attended a group run before. It was lovely to meet them both and have two new faces on the Wednesday night team! They both looked great with their lights on and did a great job running around town with us.
Our colourful lights were doubly appropriate for the occasion because it is Diwali and our task for the evening was helping the Sikh temple prepare for Diwali celebrations at the end of the week. We arrived ready to help give the kitchen a deep clean, mop the floors. vacuum the carpets and generally give the whole temple an autumn clean.
With nine of us working away we did a really thorough job and were rewarded with hot cups of chai before we departed to illuminate the dark streets once again to finish off our evening.

This week's group session brought together a team of eight, four runners and four walkers, to take on a task at the Penrose Roots to Recovery garden.
It was just 2km to the task where task owner Peter was waiting for us. The team at the garden had taken a delivery of woodchips which had just been dumped in a big pile and needed tidying up into big sacks, so we all got to work with shovels and started clearing up the mess.
With a great effort from the team we filled up six big ton bags in no time at all and were able to make a start on a second task, clearing a patch of weeds that had grown on the potato patch.
But soon our time was up and we had to head off again, with a few freshly dug potatoes in our pockets as a reward!

This week our planned cemetery seed sewing task was postponed so we were instead tasked with weeding a large roadside flowerbed.
After meeting up on Bute Street we had a run the long way round to the task while our two walkers went directly there. Recombined at the task our team got stuck in pulling the weeds from the bed and clearing up the litter within.
There were no brambles to deal with but the weeds had lots of very fine thorns that were very good at penetrating gloves! Pressing on despite them we massed a great big pile of weeds for collection by the council and exposed some Hollyhock plants that were still just about flowering and spread their seeds underfoot so we should see some more here next year.
After the task we headed to a park for a quick test of a new light based game to brighten up the dark evenings before heading home.

The Luton Run Fest is coming up soon so it's time to let all the residents know about the road closures for this massive running event.
We'll be back on these roads at full speed in a couple of weekends but tonight it was a steady pace as we went door-to-door delivering letters with all the details for the residents.
Teamwork made the dream work as we sped along the road and delivered hundreds of letters in super quick time!

This week for our group run we ran up the hill through High Town to our task on Hitchin road where community clean-up coordinator Kevin from ABCD Luton and some local residents had already got started.
A couple of road-side areas were overgrown with shrubs and weeds and needed cutting back and tidying up. On arrival our team were tooled up with shears, saws, loppers and brushes and set to cutting back and clearing up.
With our large team we managed to clean up a huge stretch of road and filled an amazing five big bags of cuttings which needed dragging up the hill to the point that the council was booked to collect from.
Before retreating back down the hill we took a few minutes to do a few rounds of walking lunges, crunches and squats in the park to round off an energetic evening.

This week a rainbow shone over our warm-up and the ascent up the hill to our task for the evening.
We were heading to the gravel sign that welcomes drivers from the M1 into Luton where some patchy weeds needed clearing. We also took some time to rearrange the black and white pebblrs to restore some clarity to the letters which were suffering from some blurred lines!
When the task was completed we headed over to Stockwood Park for a blast through some sprint intervals to build some power in our legs before heading back down to our finish point back in the Hat District.

This week we returned to a community garden on Bristol Road that we helped set up a while back. Since then a small group of people, including Gareth and Kev who met us there have been trying to keep control of the space but the brambles and weeds that used to be there were making a comeback!
Our team arrived on bikes and by running and walking to all pitch in and reclaim the ground from the weeds. 40 minutes later we'd make a bit pile of green waste.
We also topped up some of the raised beds with topsoil that needed shoveling into a barrow and moved down from the entrance.
