Tonight 19 GoodGymers ran 6km to Mousehold Health to help support the biodiversity in this natural habitat.
It's a regular and popular task on the GG Norwich calender lead by Will the local warden, who provided tools and a gave us a historical background on this famous site.
We split into 2 groups, covering a wide area pulling up bracken to allow heather and other plant species to grow. We also used 5 pitch forks to clear the area of a former chapel ready for a Heritage Open Day History Walk taking place this weekend. See the booking link if you are interested in attending.
We also celebrated the runners, volunteers and cheerleaders, who took to the streets of the city centre for Run Norwich 10km yesterday! Nice one team.
After a swift hours work it was time to bid farewell. We will be back again for more conservation work in the next month.

We visited SYEP to move and chop up some old wood, which will then be used for camp fires.

We attended an area of Mousehold Heath where some bracken and brambles had already been cut back, on the old St William's Chapel site.
We got the rakes and pitch forks out, and placed all the greenery on the drag mats, before doing multiple trips to pile them up on another area of the heath.
The evening was finished with a game of Molkky, which Katy brought with her.

An excellent evening after some heavy rain, GoodGymers took to the heath once more to pull bracken. We went to the same spot as last year and could see that the bracken had not grown back as strongly, so we got pulling.
A big space became clear and lots of heath was re-exposed, so much so that insects and dragonflies immediately swooped in as we were clearing to get to the nectar in the plants that were previously obscured.
Other highlights were a flying visit from GoodGymer Ian as he ran past our spot and seeing a hornet’s nest thriving in an dead tree, which made groundskeeper Will very happy to see.

We had a great turnout for an evening of bracken pulling at Mousehold Heath.
It was a shock (but a very pleasant one) to see the return of Panda Dave, who was actually completing his 50th GoodGym deed!
Will the Warden took us to an area of the heath where the evasive bracken was preventing the heather from thriving. So our task was to clear as much bracken as possible, to allow the heather to breath and flower.
It never ceases to amaze me how much the team get done. We transformed the area we were working in.
Leo and Emrys (the GG Norwich mascots) also enjoyed the evening.
