Tonight’s team of volunteers arrived at The Wandle River Community Garden (formerly the Paul Bowness Memorial Garden) after a truly scorching day! Fortunately, the evening air had cooled down just in time, providing the perfect conditions to get stuck into some serious community action.
We were excited to hear about the future plans to grow native plants here specifically for natural dyeing, adding a brilliant, sustainable, and creative twist to this local green space.
To smash through the to-do list, we split into two teams to tackle both the garden itself and a spot a short distance up the river:
Team 1: Armed with secateurs, set to work clearing a thick patch of stubborn brambles, prepping the site for the native dyeing plants.
Team 2: Focused their energy on the main community garden area: weeding, sweeping, tidying up, and clearing litter to get the oasis looking pristine again after a very busy weekend of visitors.
An amazing transformation - well done everyone!

Lovely couple of hours spent in the sun today at the Mitcham Community Orchard & Garden. Weeded a raised bed and planted beetroot seeds. Hammered in hazelnut stakes for Genevieve to work her magic later by weaving a willow enclosure.

Brenda Breen earned their community cape by completing their first community mission.
Brenda completed a community mission. Instead of watching TV or lying in bed, Brenda was out there making their community a better place to be. For making that choice they have earned the community cape.

Tonight, the team headed to the Tranquil Garden at Mostyn Gardens for a group session that was anything but sleepy! After a little reshuffling of the job list, we split into teams to tackle a trio of tasks: painting planters, digging to plant new trees, and getting stuck into some serious weeding.
Of course, in true GoodGym style, we got it all done and there was even time to catch up with some regulars that we haven't seen for a while. We also had the pleasure of meeting Brenda, who earned the very important t.shirt, by completing her very first session.
Well done everyone! Next week we are at Raynes Park station and need an idea of numbers in advance (to arrange the soil bags) so sign up if you can make it: https://www.goodgym.org/happenings/help-friends-of-raynes-park-station-with-moving-compost-ee5e966b-365c-4536-8ff4-eaffd3e5d078
