Another huge group of runners gathered for our Tuesday night run tonight. Welcome to Sophie, Eleanor and Lisa who joined us for the first time tonight - we hope to see you again soon!
After a game of warm-up Statues (which the group are much better at than Simon Says...), we split into two groups and headed into two teams towards our task for the night: the Malcolm X Centre in St Paul's. This local community centre runs a whole host of classes, socialising and support groups for local people across their two buildings. Jagn met us and explained the tasks for the night.
Firstly, one group was set to moving a pile of rubble and brick from one side of the centre grounds to another. The group set to it enthusiastically and got the task done in no time! A host of GoodGymers went about litter-picking around the centre grounds and local area in pairs, filling several bags of litter in just 20 minutes. The indoor groups split into cleaning teams and moving teams. The cleaning team set to work on the windows, doors and floors of the centre, giving it a good scrub down and clean up with all hands on deck. One part of the moving team moved the office from one room (downstairs) to another room (upstairs). With surprisingly minimal 'to-me, to-youing' , the group did the job quickly, despite the turn in the stairs. Meanwhile, the other part of the moving group had to move a fridge! They did this hefty task so quickly that the fridge movers then got the special treat of a short but hard fitness session to get their heart-rates pumping.
Before long, the group had completed all of the tasks (much to the amazement of Jagn and his team at our 'army'), and we headed back to base. Before people set off home for the night there was one final task: a Leap Frog Relay. It was closely contended, with a wide variation of leap frog techniques, but Darren's team took the glory at the end of it - bet that was a skill you didn't know you had.
Until next time!

Welcome back to Tuesday night Group Runs! 2019 is already shaping up to be a big one... we got GoodGym's biggest numbers ever tonight - well done Bristol and your endless enthusiasm!
We were joined by 11 people new to GoodGym Bristol tonight - it was great having you Jayne, Jenny, Josie, Lee, Paul, Natasha, Jess, Amanda, Josephine, Louise and Saskia! Not only did we have lots of new GoodGymers and a new highest attendance to celebrate, it was also Tim's 50th Good Deed AND Alex's 100th Good Deed - well done!!
After we warmed up, we waved goodbye to the walking group then split into three running groups to get to the task. Thanks to Jack, Sally, Mel and Clo for your leading and back-marking to get the groups to the surprisingly-hidden task location... We arrived at St Thomas Church in Bristol and met Ed from the Churches Conservation Trust. Ed explained to us the importance of the church, which is no longer in use but dates back to the 17th Century, and of the work of the charity, which looks after non-used churches all across the country. Ed had organised a stack of jobs for us to do and we quickly split into different groups.
Group 1 - Waxing Lyrical
The first group were set the task of reviving the beautiful old tiles by scraping off all of the dripped candle-wax from the floor. This had to be done carefully to protect the tiles, so the group worked with their special wooden scrapers to get it all off and made a MASSIVE difference to the floor.
Group 2 - Working their Pew-ny Muscles
Group Two were set to work cleaning the two entrance hallways of the church. They swept, mopped, dusted and cleaned doors to make each entrance so much more inviting to passing visitors.
Group 3 - Aisle be Dusting
The third group conquered the aisles and pews of the church with their dustclothes and brushes. They then bagged all of the dirt and mopped down the entire church, what a job!
After half an hour, the group had given the entire church a thorough clean, and we regrouped and ran back just in time for some fiercely competitive relays.
It was then time for the first GoodGym Eats of the year, where 20 of us trooped to Three Brothers to eat burgers (Andy may or may not have eaten all of the burgers photographed) and for Alex to bemuse all of the other diners by looking very casual in a centurion outfit while going about her meal. As if the burgers weren't enough, we then had Alex's AMAZING lemon cake for pudding, setting high standards for the next Centurion!

A group run on a Sunday? It must be January!
7 GoodGymers got out of their beds on the lie-in day of the week to help the British Heart Foundation in Bishopston. After hearing about all of furniture-carting and donation-sorting at the city centre store, the Bishopston crew wanted a bit of the GoodGym action.
We had Claire with us on her first GoodGym run - it was great to have you Claire and we hope to see you again soon!
Once we had got warmed up, the group (with multiple heavy-legged members from the weekend's running) started the plod up the ever-sneakily-uphill Gloucester Road. As we had between Bristol to waking up, the pavements were quiet and we got there in no time.
We were welcomed by the Store Manager, Hazel, who split us into upstairs and downstairs groups. The downstairs team had the job of clearing the the stockroom downstairs to make way for people to move around in and to make the mass of donations easily accessible. Claire, Alice and Russell got stuck in to sorting donations (finding some contenders for weirdest donations along the way...). In just half an hour, the room had gone from box-filled to organised and with so much more room for the BHF team to work in.
Meanwhile, in the Upstairs Team, Chris was busy sizing up small sequiny tops to take home and doing a stellar job of price tagging all the newly donated clothes. Sarah was sorting donations into 'would I buy this' piles and Emma cleared an entire stockroom of hangers to give room to get to the other donations.
A lovely indoor task on a cold January weekend and we can't wait to get back to helping BHF soon!
