Giving an arm and lots of legs to make Sheffield beautiful

Sheffield Report written by Ash

10 GGers braved the weather to help Courageous Karen and the Pitsmoor Pickers clean up the Burngreave area of Sheffield, picking up litter and the occasional toy arm (not sure what happened to the rest of it).

We set off from the Showroom following a quick 4-way lunge warm up to get us ready for the bending needed for litter picking. Litter picked for 45 mins then dumped our bags at the top of the hill ready for collection.

Karen thought we needed more exercise though, so we got in a hill sprint back up to collect the bags and drop them down at the main bag collection point, ready for the council pick up.

It started to rain on the way back, but that didn't stop us with a final Howard Street hill sprint (taking care not to slip on the slippery stones), before a bus stop stretch off.

Hands down it was a successful mission.

Well well well road... Time for a haircut

Sheffield Report written by Tom Mutton

With all this lovely weather we have been having it has meant that green growth has been shooting up everywhere! It's fantastic to see but from time to time the hedges around Heeley People's Park need a quick trim to keep things looking prim and proper and providing good open paths for pedestrians passing by. Peter pepper picked a peck of pickled peppers.

14 of us rocked up to help Parky Rob with the task this week. After a brief brief we got straight to it, grabbing loppers and cutting back the overgrowth to fill the provided tonne bags with the cuttings which were then placed in the park for composting. We also had a good sweep of the pavement and the gutter after to clean up after ourselves and leave the paths wider and nice and clear for all users.

After a good lot of cutting, tree and berry identification we popped tools back into the barrows, emptied the final tonne bags and said our farewells to Rob until the next time.

Before people went their separate ways we got some fitness in on the steps with a couple of short 30s bursts of:

  • Press Ups (3 options)
  • Box jumps or stair sets

Once complete we headed off into the hot summers eve back to the Showroom for some stretching and cooling down.

Until next week, happy running :)

Getting Picky on Pitsmoor Road

Sheffield Report written by Tom Mutton

9 of us headed over to Pitsmoor Road to help the local Pitsmoor Pickers group with a clean up on either side of the road. It was great to welcome back Robert and Thomas after spells away for work and travels. Welcome back guys!

By the time we finished the bags were pilled up and the streets were looking spotless.

On the way back we paired up for some fast times fitness featuring paired work involving:

  • Sprints
  • Isometric Squats
  • Planks
  • Bum slaps (you had to be there)

At the end of the run Celine had the great idea of heading for some 'picky' food at a local Etheopean restaurant - Frehiwat Habesha. The food was delish and with loads to spare most of us even had lunch sorted for the next day!

Until next time, happy running :)

Power Serge!

Sheffield Report written by Tom Mutton

Huge congrats to the SENSATIONAL SERGE for his 100th run tonight!

As is now customary Serge donned the 100 GG SHF cape for the eve in celebration of his achievements.

Serge truly is a Power Serge, always supper smiley and putting in a huge energetic effort on all tasks! Thanks and congrats Serge! Here's to the next 100!

It was also the first run for Amanda, who we welcomed to the GG SHF family. Please do click through to support Amanda and we hope you join us again next Amanda.

We were back to our old friend Parky Rob this week at Heeley Peoples Park who had arranged for an incredibly timed load of woodchip to be dumped at the entrance to the park which we got straight to, bucketing, carrying and spreading all over the children's playground to ensure they have fresh, soft chip to play and land on. With all the rain of late the old chip was not looking so chipper and needed freshening up with some fresh hot chip. We were well up for it, needing no motivating to get rotivating, acting as our of Mr/Mrs rotivators!

Once the task was complete we downed tools, said so long to Rob and headed to the U-Mix centre for some fitness which this week involved some paired work with dead arm hangs and/or knee lifts and step ups/box jumps.

Once back we headed into the Showroom for drinks, food and chats.

Until next time, happy running :)

Bikes... Camera... Action! 🚲

Sheffield Report written by Helen Alford (she/her)

It’s the 30th anniversary of the Trans Pennine Trail. Sheffield has approximately 17 miles of National Cycle Network and growing, much of which is also part of the Trans -Pennine Trail. The Network enters Sheffield from the north at Grenoside and leave the city to the East at Rother Valley Park and to the West at Ringinglow. More info can be found here: https://www.transpenninetrail.org.uk/sunday-30th-june-2019-30-on-the-30th-part-of-our-30th-anniversary-celebrations/

We had several GG Sheff newbies amongst the 34 runners at tonight's sesh: Anna , Joe Waller, Sy Atchana Fu and Jonathan Dick. Hope to see them at plenty more runs in the future - make sure to give them a cheer!

It was also Gilly Harris's 50th good deed! She wore the now-classic 50th bowtie with pride. Amazing work Gill!

Tonight's task with Sustrans took us to the old Durham Ox pub. Luckily, this is quite a short route as we had some runners who had completed races at the weekend, ranging from a 10k to a marathon (well done Bee!). With our fun to the location being very short and very straightforward, we arrived in good time and were greeted by Simon, who delegated tasks and tools to the group.

Armed with litter pickers, brushes, spades and loppers we soon turned a rather sad looking stretch of the National Cycle Network from a nightmare into a cyclist's dream. Turns out a thirty-four-strong group can make a massive, massive difference in forty minutes (which we knew already, but it's always nice to see). We were spurred on this time, of course, by the presence of an ITV crew, filming for a segment on Sustrans. Wanting to impress them, we upped our game!

After the excitement of the task, we returned to base, detouring slightly to the Sheffield Amphitheatre for a fitness session. The group split into the teams, and rotated round three activities: 1. Steel City Steps sprint 2. Box Jumps/Step Ups 3. Tri Dips

Confident that everyone had had enough exercise, we then headed back to the Showroom via the old bridge and across the station forecourt for some stretching, punning, and light refreshments...

Special shoutout to the wonderfully CREATIVE CHRIS DYER who came up with tonight's title. Puntastic.
