Leaflet It Be

Monday 18th November 2019

Written by Char Binns

It is getting cooooolllldddd! But this team of superheroes don't seem to feel it, warmed by the good deeds they're racking up.

On a dark, properly cold evening, 15 runners showed up for one of our final outdoor tasks of the year: leafleting for Jubilee Sports Bank. Our goal was to make locals aware of this affordable, community sports centre, by distributing 300 (or was there more?) leaflets to houses in the area.

With a little competition and a bit of herding cats, after half an hour, we were 300 leaflets lighter.

Shout out to Tim who led his team to victory and to Sharon whose team came a close second, with the final scores 2 versus 1. Tim gets extra kuddos for coming up with this week's title pun.

It's becoming more of a challenge to find suitable spaces for our fitness session, so thanks to the team for their patience and adaptability. This week's bleep test didn't go quite to plan but did help the runners clock up 8km in total for tonight!

The run back was all downhill and we made short time of it. Arriving back to our cool-down spot, we met with John who was waiting for us. Kuddos to him for working late and missing the task, yet running into town for our Task Force meeting.

In the Task Force meeting we discussed our plans for the January Challenge, weighing up the possibility of stealing the golden trowel from GoodGym York - who's up for it? In the meantime, keep wracking up those good deeds by coming along next week.

Bonus shout out for Yan who ran to and from GoodGym last night, clocking up around 13km in total - great work Yan!

It's a desk job but not as we know it

Thursday 20th June 2019

One Good Gymer went to help the Life Bank with their open day. The amazing Laura and her team reached out to Good Gym to see if some of us could go along and help with the logistics on the day. It being a Thursday that posed an issue as most people were working but Matthew was free and was happy to help out, running the registration for most of the day, which freed up Laura to host the day. Matthew also got to meet some amazing organisations and hopefully forge some links with more organisations which Good Gym Liverpool can help. So, for once it was a task where Matthew could sit down on the job and still do the Good Gym Magic

Leafletting?! You can bank on us!!

Monday 27th May 2019

Written by John Connaghan

*8 brave Goodgymers sacrificed their Bank Holiday Monday eve to spread the word about the Jubilee Sports Bank. *

Jubilee Sports Bank offers affordable sporting activities and gym membership to the Kensington Community. They needed to get the word out on their Summer schedule to encourage locals to use their great facilities.

With indecisive weather hovering above us, we wound our way through the College grounds and up the hill to Kensington to start our leaflet drop with competitive gusto. We sprinted down through the streets of a neighbouring estate to the Sports Bank with each team working in relay. It was a close one but well done, with a close fought 2-1 win, to Matt, Tim, Becky and Christina. It went down to the wire with only a letterbox in it!!

Working together we leaflet-dropped our way to Phythian Park for our fitness session. With a large crowd of 1 onlooker shocked by our fitness flash mob we did a sprint session and skipping hamstring stretches to vary our running effort for the evening.

This week's shout out goes to Basma, Tim and Emma who are now well settled in and true GGers. Finding my feet in leading the group, a big thank you for the help from Becky B and Matt backmarking was much appreciated.

Well done everyone for some speedy leafletting and sprinting. Sophie is leading the Monday run next week so sign up to give her and Sunflowers Cancer Care Centre support if you can :)

Hitting root 66

Saturday 23rd March 2019

Written by Matthew

Pauline, Sam and Matthew were back at The Jubilee Sports Bank in Kensington for another instalment on clearing the enormous raised beds they have there so they can hand them over to the local nursery school and teach the young children about growing and eating things. This was something like the sixth time we have been there and we got very close to finishing the second of the six raised beds. The weather was kind to us this time and nobody got too badly brambled. Matthew promised scones and jam and duly forgot to make them. Apologies and hopefully next time he will remember. Really good progress was made and some particularly deep rooted plants proving no match for this intrepid team. Onto the next visit in a couple of weeks.

You Raised Me Up

Wednesday 13th March 2019

Written by Matthew

The Jubilee Sport Bank is an amazing Not For Profit community sports centre in a really deprived area of Liverpool. They have got some enormous raised beds, which have become overgrown and they want them to be cleared so that at least two of them can be used by the local nursery school to plant food and teach children about growing things. Good Gym has been here on several occasions over the months and so it was a pleasure to go back and do some more work on these raised beds but there is still quite a way to go, so this is a work in progress.

Kenny Have A Spade? Hail No!

Monday 4th March 2019

Written by Char Binns

They say the sun always shines on GoodGym. But what they say isn't always true. Last night 8 brave runners ran 5km to help a community sports centre.

In almost a year of Group Runs here in Liverpool, we have had just one really bad weather day. Until last night. The runners who joined me beat heavy rain, gail-force winds, a hail storm and plenty of mud, all in the name of doing good and getting fit. They are my heroes.

The short but very soggy run took us back to Jubilee Sports Bank, a community sports centre in Kensington. This was the same tasks as last week, when we made a good start clearing an old flower bed. Then with Mat and Sam doing a little extra over the weekend, there wasn't a great amount of foliage left to clear. But when we arrived at the task, due to some mix up, there were only four tools available. In true GoodGym style, we made do and did our best with the resources we had. Meanwhile, those of us who were tool-less took part in a fitness session with the main aim of staying warm.

We left with one large flower bed, totally cleared and ready for a community planting project come spring - great work team!

This week's shout outs are for everyone, for showing up and being cheerful in that awful weather. You are amazing!

But also a "hello and welcome" to newbie Katie and tourist kudos to Leanne who was visiting from the mighty GG York. It was great to run with you both :)

Here's hoping for better weather next week. But GoodGym stops for no one, so we'll be out doing good each Monday evening, come rain, shine or hail.

Happy running!
