To PB or not to be?

Saturday 18th July

Written by Catherine

The anticipation was high this morning as we made our way to Brook Leys parkrun.

People travel the length and breadth of the country to run this fast course, and the question this morning was whether it would be a PB for GoodGymer Scott who travelled all the way from Cambridge city centre.

Having run there, it wasn't looking good as despite the near perfect conditions, the legs weren't feeling it. After a photo and a pep talk, I wished Scott well, and then all I could do was wait. I lined up at the back for a walk around the lake before taking up my position as barcode scanner. Being a 2.5 lap course, Scott whizzed past on lap one with thumbs up. Was this a good sign?? I dared to hope.

The barcode scanning came as a welcome distraction. I scanned 100s of barcodes for finishers (including Scott's), so when it came to submit, I was a nervous wreck and extra careful to ensure the precious cargo of a result was safely logged.

He only went and did it!! 🥳 And smashing his previous record.

It's always special when consistent training pays off. With only a brief moment to celebrate, Scott got straight to sorting finishing tokens to walk away with a good deed alongside the PB.

Well done to Scott and all the other 315 finishers today! ⭐

Having, hopefully, slightly more relaxed mornings, Caroline was up running in Edinburgh and Harriet was jeffing in Fulbourn. Great work team! 🙌

U-turn my feet right round

Saturday 18th April

Written by Catherine

A sunny Saturday morning spent marshalling at Brook Leys parkrun.

Well known for being a fast course, the u-turn at the top of the 'hill' makes for a tight turnaround, with many runners impressively executing the Japanese U-turn method. It was quite a sight 🌀

Brilliantly enabled by 33 volunteers, well done to the 385 finishers, 81 of whom achieved PBs 🎉

Meanwhile, up in Glasgow Caroline was running a VERY hilly parkrun, adding a tricky 'Q' to her alphabet. 🙌

Fog-et about a lie in, it's parkrun o' clock!

Saturday 21st March

Written by Caroline

Goodgym Cambridge were back at parkrun this morning, supporting all the runners and walkers starting their weekends right! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Caroline headed to a very foggy Brook Leys to marshal, while Harriet led the charge at Fulbourn Hospital as volunteer coordinator. Between them, they cheered on 560 participants! 🙌

By the end of the event, the mist had lifted and the sun came out - just in time for the cycle home ☀️

A run-derful start to the weekend

Saturday 21st February

Written by Caroline

We had two representatives at parkruns across Cambridge this weekend! There was Harriet at Fulbourn Hospital on one side of town, and Caroline at Brook Leys over on the other. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Harriet made for an excellent marshal, cheering on the runners and walkers and providing valuable moral support. Caroline got to work placing signs directing participants and battling the winds to highlight benches with hi-vis tabards, before taking the mic to deliver the first timers briefing. She can now tick 'standing atop a tree planter to deliver an amplified address to a surprisingly large crowd' off her bucket list! 🎤

With a number of nearby events offlined, Brook Leys saw 667 runners and walkers - what an amazing atmosphere! A real highlight was helping someone at their first ever parkrun register last-minute to have a barcode in time, and catching up with them afterwards to hear how much they enjoyed it. The spirit of parkrun was on full display today! ☺️

parkrun around the world

Saturday 31st January

Written by Catherine

Squeezing in one last good deed and a few kms before the end of January, GoodGymers were out and about at parkrun this morning.

I was marshalling at Brook Leys parkrun, cheering 643 runners and walkers ( a course record!) as they took on the tight corners of the course. A beautiful morning in the sunshine ☀️

Across the other side of Cambridge, Harriet was running her 100th parkrun! An amazing achievement, congratulations 🎉

Further afield, there was a bit of parkrun tourism with Caroline in St Albans, showcasing her 25 milestone t-shirt and Alexandra completing a rather extreme parkrun in Lithuania, complete with snow! Well done 🙌

New year, new Leys of life!

Saturday 17th January

Written by Caroline

This weekend, a group of goodgymers helped out with parkruns all around Cambridge!

At our first Brook Leys parkrun of 2026, Catherine and Caroline had an early start to set-up the course. Beginning with signage around the lake, the duo then set up the start area and got creative with some cones to set up a 2-way system at a tight corner. They even bumped into some of the Girls That Jog at the start line 💪

All this served as a good warm-up to then run the course together, with Ross and Nick joining for even more goodgym representation 🪧🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Over at Fulbourn Hospital parkrun, Harriet had a full roster of volunteers to coordinate, and the session was a complete success! 🏆

As is becoming somewhat of a tradition, the group enjoyed pastry treats and some hot drinks to warm up afterwards 🥐☕️
