Fun, Forests and Football

Wednesday 17th June

Written by Isaac Beevor (He/him)

What a night!

We had a years best attendance with 16 people joining us over the course of the evening.

We started out with two tasks. The majority of us headed to Peckham Rye's Tiny Forest. There we helped weed around the small trees, making sure they have the best chance to grow. We also cleared out any litter we found as well.

Emma led a smaller group to Traid in Peckham to help with changing their clothes over.

We then headed to Peckham Bowls for our monthly social, where we were joined by Andrada and Anna B. We played an hour of bowls, including a pizza break. Well done to Emma and Rosalind and Chloe and myself for winning the bowls in the competitions.

Finally, we headed to the Ivy House, managing to squeeze in between tables to watch England win 4-2!

Tiny Forest, big hearts

Wednesday 30th July 2025

Written by Southwark runner

Last week, 7 Goodgymmers went to Peckham Rye Tiny Forest to do some weeding.

First to arrive at our meeting point, Old Spike, were Steve and Nelly. I arrived late to find them waiting outside, having a jolly natter. David arrived next, followed by Rosemary and Goodgym tourist Pippa 👋

After a quick warm up and ice breaker, we set of for an artificially long run whilst Steve walked there - this was a smart move since in the humidity, running felt surprisingly hard! A slog around the park, but worth it because it will make us stronger..

We arrived at Tiny Forest - James was already there, and Steve too. They'd already got stuck in. We followed suit, wading and weeding in between the trees. It was a chilled out kind of task, with chatter about recent news reports (someone got arrested for carrying gardening tools?!) and where to go for a drink after the task. The consensus was Franks cafe, which coincidentally was also someone's answer to the ice breaker question: "Whats your favourite place in London to go to in the summer?" 🌇☀️

Not so Tiny Forest

Wednesday 4th June 2025

On Wednesday 14 of us went to do some weeding at Peckham Rye Park and Common Tiny Forest (which has grown a lot since our last visit!) followed by a game of bowls at Peckham Bowls. We did get caught in the rain on our loop of the park but it stopped by the time we got to Tiny Forest. And luckily was dry for the rest of the evening.

On a cold winters night 8 GoodGymers met at Old Spike. After a quick warm up we headed on a 2.5k run through East Dulwich to the Tiny Forest in Peckham Park. Our task for the evening was weeding around the planted sapling trees so they are able to grow and not get out competed by plants and brambles. This wasn’t the easiest in the dark but we made do with head torches and lights. We are looking forward to revisiting in the Summer to see the trees flourishing!

You wood not beWEED it!

12 Goodgymmers braved a cold Wednesday evening to provide a much needed weeding of the Peckham Rye Tiny Forest

After a quick warm up we headed out around Peckham Rye park, running about 2km to the Tiny Forest. Once there we met Anna, who is a Goodgym Southwark member and Treekeeper for the Tiny Forest.

Though the night was dark we waded into the sea of grass, weeds and even some drooping sedge (a native of this country) and cleared areas around the trees. This helps the young trees grow, as at this early stage they can get out competed by the more aggressive grasses. It was already impressive to see the growth of some of the trees, which are only about 2 years old.

Once we made a big dent in the weeds we headed back to Old Spike, where we celebrated with Benjamin, who had reached his 50th good deed. Santa came early with Ginger cake and we know that there will be be a new tshirt in your Christmas stocking!
