Lost & Mound

Leeds Report written by Laura

Tonight, we mainly stood in amazement at Christian's speedy digging skills!

We were digging trenches at Bedford Fields , filling them with logs and garden waste to create mounds. This is a permaculture technique that uses decaying wood as a base to create nutrient-rich, moisture-retaining garden beds. The buried wood acts like a sponge, absorbing water during wet periods and releasing it during dry spells. As the wood breaks down over several years, it provides a consistent, slow-release nutrient source.

It was a freezing night but we managed to keep warm (ish) with our hard work.

Thanks for coming out in the cold everyone:)

Doing the Donkey work

Leeds Report written by Laura

It was great to see so many of you come out on a wet Wednesday evening! We had the muddiest run of winter so far as we made our way to Meanwood Valley Farm. We were split into 3 groups, one group to do compost turning (it always surprises me how up for this job everyone is), another group were moving pallets & the third group were cleaning the walls & windows in the greenhouse.

The phrase 'boys and their toys' came to mind when Adam got hold of the pressure washer! He was enjoying it so much we were worried he might flood the place :)

We always love visiting the animals at the farm & we found out the donkey's names...Reggie, Benny & Alfie (if I remember correctly)?! A kidnap plot is being hatched...

Well done to Rachel, tonight was her 90th good deed!

Another great night, thanks everyone!

Meanwood Valley Farm - Various Tasks

We are a small charity with limited resources, so jobs like this often fall by the wayside. It helps us to continue to focus on our core work, but also with compost, it means we can have less inputs and save money

The Writing's on the Wall

Leeds Report written by Laura

Tonight, we had a new task helping Headingley Neighbourhood Watch clear graffiti from the bins, telephone & electrical boxes & shop shutters.

We met Nilesh who organises it all and he provided paint, graffiti removal spray, scrapers and sponges, so we quickly got to work.

Christian and Sreenu scraped flyers off the bins, I helped Nilesh remove graffiti from shop shutters and the rest painted over the graffiti.

It was a cold night out, but we made a massive impact in an hour. What a great team we have in Leeds! Thanks all for another great night.

These Boots Are Made For Walking...

Leeds Report written by Laura

Tonight Helen led a run from Heart up to Coffee on The Crescent, where we'd promised the owner that we'd litter pick in the local area when we helped him on Saturday.

I met the group there with bags & pickers & we got to task picking the lots & lots of litter around the area. We filled a whopping 14 bags full, not bad for 55 minutes. It just shows what a huge impact our team can have in a short period of time. Jason won the prize for most interesting find, a pair of boots!

Coffee on the Crescent gave us free coffee vouchers for the team which were much appreciated!

Welcome to Sreenu who joined us for the first time tonight, it's great to have you on board.

Bad Asses

Leeds Report written by Laura

Tonight, in the freezing cold we ran down to Meanwood Farm for our first visit of the year. After admiring the beautiful donkeys, cows and sheep who were in the barn to keep warm, we split into two groups for two tasks. One group headed into the greenhouse for what Katie described as lifting, cleaning, emptying and rearranging equipment (or words to that effect)! The second group headed to the apple trees to lay cardboard around the trees ready for wood chipping. Lydia, Helen and I then grabbed a wheelbarrow each and were tasked with moving wood chip up to the trees. This was quite a good workout lugging those up the hill & it kept us warm (kinda) on this very cold night.

Our group have a free the donkey's campaign in the works, as the donkey's only reside at the farm during the winter, they're on Blackpool beach all summer :(

Well done for coming out in this weather all! Welcome to Jess & Ella, it was great to meet you both.
