Filling planters!

Three of us pitched up early on a Sunday to Summertown in the fog to set up and help run water station number 1 at the Oxford Half Marathon.
Skills learnt: how to stack a table 5 layers high of cups. How to pour water whilst simultaneously filling said cups.
We then cheered in the runners and wheelchairs, yelling "PINCH AND SLURP" at intervals and trying to dodge flying water cups and water!
Pack down was efficient and fast - it was like we were never there!!
All the runners looked amazing and we even managed to spot Anwen, Fred and Alice!!

Warneford Hospital is creating a new garden on the front lawn to mark the 200th anniversary of the site next year. It's a big undertaking, with an avenue of trees, and a series of huge planters made from curved corrugated steel sheets for the different wards to take ownership of.
Last night we were filling the gabion baskets which surround the planters for the trees. They were filled with a combination of recycled rubble and pine cones from the mature trees around the lawn. It was quite a creative process! We also shifted twenty large pallets into the bottoms of the 7 huge raised bed planters, and started filling them with a combination of woodchip and top soil. It was a race against the sunset, but we made good progress.
We'll be back next week for more of the same!
Thank you Vicky for the report title.

This evening we returned to the Orchard Triangle. We have a long history with this space, having helped plant and maintain the trees and done lots of weeding and clearing over the past few years.
Over the summer the grass around the fruit trees has got rather long, brambles have started to creep in and some large branches needed chopping and clearing.
Armed with a variety of tools and our usual can-do attitude we cracked on and left the space looking a lot tidier by the end.
A few of us then trotted off into the dusky evening for our post task run, head torches were a must, autumn has certainly arrived.

In a race against the sunset we headed to Aston's Eyot for a last evening scything session of the year.
The Friends of Aston's Eyot are creating a new meadow area, so the task this evening was to continue to prepare the area for wild flower seeds. We scythed and raked nettles from the perimeter, bashed in 3 fence posts (it needs fencing so the deer don't eat everything), hoed away unwanted seedlings which were popping up, and collected up a vast amount of broken glass. Aston's Eyot used to be a rubbish dump, so there is a huge amount of Victorian glass just below the surface.
Well done on reaching 50 Good Deeds Laura!

This evening we returned to St. Nicholas' Primary School to continue the sprucing up of their garden and Forest School area.
Weeds have started to poke their way through some of the weed matting and brambles are creeping over the fence line. Bramble prickles and primary school children are not a good combination!
Armed with loppers, choppers and sturdy gloves we set to work, with one eye on the light - the evenings really are getting darker as autumn plods along.
After an hour and a bit the space was looking a lot neater and we all trotted off for our evening exercise!
Welcome to Goodgym Laura, so lovely to meet you!
