Camden Report written by Alex Murtough (he/him)
10 wonderful GoodGymers made a HUGE difference... amidst the beats of a city festival!
Regent's Park is usually a sanctuary of peace – there's green and trees, flowers too – and you can often escape the sounds and bustle of nearby Camden.
But last night... we arrived to beats and drops and cheers... as well as three hefty security people guarding our entrance to the (wonderfully hidden) tool yard!
Pete – all round Camden nature hero – soon smoothed the way and we arrived at a yard that was desperate for a little GoodGym TLC :)
Our special group – Alex, Caitlin, Emily, Jackie, John, Michael, Natalia, Pete, and Steve – swiftly split into groups:
Michael and Jackie started by sorting and folding the pile of garden sacks – the holed sorted from the non-holed, and everything tidied and ready for use! And they then picked brooms and swept the yard to shine!
Alex and Natalia grabbed shears and tackled a Jumanji-esque patch of vines – they cleared everything and it was wonderful!
Caitlin, Emily, John, and Steve made light work of a pile of wood (keeping the larger bits that can be used for poles or building), before raking and sweeping and bagging a mountain of leaves (sifting the plastic trash from it as they did!)
And Pete was here and there and everywhere coordinating everything!
The yard looked liked a different yard at the end – a huge difference – even if we didn't quite get the peace we'd envisaged!
Thanks everyone!

Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
Area Activator Simon and the Goodgym Islington team met up at Camden Estate Gardens last night for a very fulfilling series of community green space maintenance tasks. As he was waiting for the rest of the crew to arrive, he spotted a beautiful young jay, comfortably settled across a brick wall and completely unfazed by his presence (apparently jays let ants crawl on them for delousing purposes, and there was definitely an ants nest attached to the wall).
7 Goodgym helpers (including first timer Cat- welcome!) joined Simon and local gardening expert Michelle for 3 main projects. Firstly, we set about unloading a compost bin (the final stage of turning) into a wheelbarrow using shovels. As the new fine material is lifted from the container, we then used a sieve (attached to a wooden frame) to filter any debris from the composting process. By the end of the evening, we had sorted an entire builder's merchant sack of new soil!
Secondly, Caitlin did a smashing job of giving the whole area a thorough sweep and tidy. She took the time to filter rubbish and recycling before adding green waste in the appropriate recepticals too- while making sure not to bother the cute little "slaters" (Scottish for "woodlice"- or the little guys who live under slates!).
Thirdly, Emily and Alison had the chance to try out a big fun motorised aeration machine, to make short work of ploughing and oxygenating through the tough soil in three future communal fruit and veg patches (we might be asked back to help with building frames to protect the produce from pests!). We even found time to spread a big container of new soil across the patches, before sweeping and tidying.
An action packed evening of wholesome Goodgym gardening fun! Well done everyone!

Camden Report written by Alex Murtough (he/him)
Eight wonderful GoodGymers enjoyed community last night!
The start of April signaled the light and lengthening evenings, and the end gifted us brightness and heat.
Our group looked wondrously summer-y as we assembled on Cressfield Close in Kentish Town.
Home to the City Farm, this quiet cul-de-sac is also where a happy sheltered housing block sits. Our group has been helping tend their (wonderfully cared for) communal garden for years, and we got quickly to our tasks yesterday.
Guided by ace manager, Cathi, and kind residents, Marie and Michael, we settled into rhythms of conversation and work.
Caitlin and Siobhan filled two new vegetable growing pens with manure, mulch, and compost, and they left them ready for the coming weeks' incoming vegetables!
John and Jackie (later joined by Caitlin and Siobhan) worked their weeding magic on a growing patch that will soon bloom with roses - the difference they made was huge!
And Emilie, Imogen, and Steve visited lovely resident, Kit, and together they removed bag-upon-bag of weeds, shrubs, and vines - they left the space transformed!
Thank you, everyone! This was a special evening to share!
