Tentatively venturing out despite the threat of rain, a gang of 7 do-gooders headed to the mighty Brixton Windmill for a spot of gardening.

There were plenty of energetic dogs about but they just about managed to let us get on with our activities in peace.

We managed a whole lot of stuff:

  • Ella and I were moving and spreading mulch around in a raised bed some GGers had erected a few weeks back.

  • Laura was helping plant some little shrubs around the Windmill's brand new flagpole!?

  • Esse and Jason got stuck in straight away cutting down a little bush that was riddled with black aphids or something. Jason then proved himself to be a master-grafter, cutting out bits of grass from between the pavement slabs and putting them in areas that were worn down from walkers.

  • And Shauna and Sarah were trimming back a bush which was growing out a little too far. A passer-by suggested that now was not exactly the best time for chopping bushes because of birds nesting, but it was okay - they'd kept a keen eye out for any possible nests.

After a whole hour and a half (and just one short-ish, sharp shower), we called it a day.

Lovely to see, meet and re-meet you guys! Solid job! 🥳

No birds were harmed in the writing of this run report.

Brixton Windmill
A little bit of history in central Brixton!

The Friends of Windmill Gardens (FoWG) were formed in 2003 with three aims: * to get the Grade II listed Brixton Windmill restored and opened for public visits – in 2002 it had been put on English Heritage's buildings at risk register; * to make Windmill Gardens park a more welcoming space for local people; * to have a new education centre at the windmill. Windmill Gardens gained a Green Flag Community Award in 2015 and we have just been judged again so our fingers are crossed that we will retain the award for the next two years.
