Everyone was excited for a group run to Luxmore Gardens without involving alkinet but also everyone was tired from the big half and music festivals. We slowly made our way up the hill to see just how much mulch awaited us.
On arrival at Luxmore we were met by the team with multiple wheelbarrows, plenty of tools and 2 giant bags of mulch.
It wasn't long before we got into a groove, loading the wheelbarrows, taking them down to the flower beds, raking the mulch around the plants and bringing the wheelbarrrows back.
A surprisingly quick amount of time later and both bags were empty!! Next time, we're going to have 3 bags to empty!

Another trip to Luxmore Gardens before it gets too dark and the gates as shut early. As usual we needed to tackle the green alkinet and any bindweed that was taking over the plants. There's always a lot of each of those weeds, they end up taking over the plants and stealing their nutrients and water.
Luckily we had a large team of volunteers from Friends of Luxmore Gardens to complete the task even quicker than normal. Well done team!
We'll be heading back to Luxmore Gardens one last time this year to tackle some mulching.
A group of us headed to Mamma Dough for pizza which after a long hiatus was very good pizza!
Next week is a longer run to Seniors and we'll be doing some big tasks in the garden. See you there!

To start the group run this week, I was interested to know if anyone had discovered any new favourite sports to watch since the Olympics have been on. We had some new sports and some sticking with their favourite sports from last week.
Our group run task for last night was Luxmore Gardens and on arrival after tackling the hill, we were given the good news that Glendale had weeded so we got to do more cosmetic tasks.
On our to do list was: - tidy up the edges of the border nearest the gate so that it looks tidy when people enter the park - untangling the bindweed that's taking over some of the plants - technically weeding - chopping back some of the bigger shrubs and plants - covering the border near the gate with a layer of mulch plus relocating all the bugs to a new area of the garden
A short run meant that most of us were back for the 800m final! Don't forget we have the summer social on Saturday at Hilly Fields - more details to follow today!

We gathered at Glass Mill slightly nervous of the threat of rain after Jenny warned us of the weather warning in place...but no one had been deterred by it or hadn't seen it (like me) so we had a full house of those signed up. Welcome back Khai, hope you enjoyed your return to GG Lewisham - don't leave it a year next time!
Our quick warm up consisted of chasing each other round in circles and then it was onwards and upwards to Luxmore Gardens. A hidden gem of a garden in New Cross.
The tasks for the evening were to clear the bed of weeds and at first glance there's not always a lot of weeds obvious to our (still after many years) untrained eye for spotting weeds but that flower bed was full of them!
The next task was to cut back the ivy and roses that were overhanging the birds (see photo).
Then all of a sudden it dramatically began to absolutely pour down. Luckily I'd been saying we had 2min left for the past 5min so it was time to pack up tools and head away from the shelter of the trees to run back down to Glass Mill.
Next week we are heading to Seniors and then there's a post-group run social (location tbc).

Monday was a very warm evening and a fantastic 15 GoodGymers braved the heat to help clear Luxmore Gardens of pesky weeds that take over all the plants in the garden. Luckily it was a short run up the hill to Luxmore Gardens and armed with water (due to the lack of working water fountains in the borough) we were there in no time.
As always there were lots of weeds that needed to be removed. We think a group might've been there before us as there were piles of weeds left lying around - BadGym maybe? Once we were done with our weeding, we of course took all our weeds over to the compost pile.
On Monday we are heading to PNK Garden so if you don't fancy the longer run then feel free to meet us there!
This run report is better late than never as today I noticed the water fountains are switched on again!! But let's keep having water with us in case Lewisham Council don't pay the Thames Water bill or something!

Fresh from the Three Peaks I gave all leading duties to Oli who kindly agreed to lead the group up the Two Peaks to Luxmore Gardens whilst I walked ahead.
It was our first visit to Luxmore Gardens this summer which meant the alkanet would be out in force. The alkanet is loved by bees but its leaves cause a rash on humans so the volunteer team have decided to remove it to prevent it taking over (which it easily does).
The main task for the evening was removing the alkanet and any other pesky weeds that are suffocating the plants. By the end of the evening we had piles and piles of weeds along the path and the last job of the group run was to pile it all up on the compost heap.
Thanks for your hard work team!
