Don't Go Raking my Bark...

Saturday 4th April

Written by Sarah M

Presenting this year's Easter Parade - Good-gym style!

12 GoodGym-ers met on a changeable Easter Saturday morning, some travelling from Park run to Bark run, for our Community Mission today at the lovely Maryon Park Community Garden.

We were met by Tim & Edna, as well as a veritable mountain of freshly delivered woodchip, which our task today was built around. The woodchip had to be moved uphill from the entrance to the Forest School area beyond the food growing plots.

Cue lots of teamwork and with shovels at the ready we were soon loading up wheelbarrows and relaying them up the hill to where more of the team were waiting with rakes to smooth over the woodchip in the Forest School.

After half an hour we'd already made a huge dent in the pile, getting it down to a definite hill, at which point resident beetle Ringo decided to make his objections known. Regrettably, Ringo did have to be re-housed, but is hopefully settling nicely in his new woodland home.

Soon the hill became a few scraps & it was time to sweep up the last few flakes, down tools and partake in a much appreciated cuppa โ˜•๏ธ

A very warm welcome to Mayuri on your first task.

Thanks all & see you soon ๐Ÿ˜Š

Storm Amy: The Leaf Broadcast from Maryon Park!ย

Saturday 4th October 2025

Written by Sarah M

A blustery but thankfully dry Saturday morning in October blew 2 goodgym-ers to Maryon Park Community Garden in Charlton.ย

For anyone that's not visited, the garden is a community food growing area within one of Charlton 's many green spaces, where plothouders grow everything from pumpkins to tomatoes, beetroot to beans, and today we saw some pretty giant courgettes!

Our task today was to clear away a build-up ofย leaves from the entrance pathways, to make the area safer and tidier. Leafblower & shovels at the ready, we'd soon run out of space in the composting bins and it was time for a tidy up and a catch up with Tim & Edna.ย

Have a great weekend all! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Getting swept off our feet at Maryon Park Gardens

Saturday 2nd August 2025

Written by Sarah M

Holiday season has arrived, which means Harvest time is on its way too, and the Community Garden at Maryon Wilson park in Charlton is looking amazing, brimming with flowers as well as crops ranging from cucumbers to sweet peas, and courgettes to rhubarb.

Today was our monthly mission here, and a great catch up with Tim and Edna. Our main task was chopping back overhanging foliage, bind weed and similar tree growth to help make the pathways easier to navigate. (Some long armed tree-lopping-choppers, which is possibly not the technical term, were a massive help with the higher branches...!)

A good old sweep up completed our work, so it was time for tea and snacks (massive thanks to Edna) and out through the woods to the rest of the weekend ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Mind the gap was a good de-fence

Saturday 7th June 2025

Written by Julian Osman

Today we were back at Maryon Park community garden, a wonderful space that has been lovingly run by Edna and Tim for many years. Coming here has always been a favourite task for Good Gym Greenwich and it was nice to be back. The tasks today were manyfold; the garden having become quite overgrown in places and a gap had opened up in the orchard that needed to be plugged to make things safer.

So to work, and two of the team worked to plug the gap using some old pieces of fence (with some masterful manoeuvring needed to get said fences to the orchard), two of us set to trimming overhanging foliage and the rest of us set to removing copious numbers of weeds.

And karma was kind to us: despite a terrible weather forecast the rain held off for the whole session and after an hourโ€™s hard work we were done. As usual Tim and Edna had generously provided snacks and we also benefited for some lovely leftover cake that Cat had prepared for her book group (thanks Cat, it was lovely).

Spring has Sprung...so Let Us Spray!

Saturday 1st March 2025

Written by Sarah M

March 1st brought with it some much welcome sunshine, so it was with a spring in our step that 5 GoodGym-ers met Tim and Edna at the Community Garden in Charlton's Maryon Park for today's task. We were soon busy with cleaning the greenhouse (cue power washing!) as well as carting wheelbarrels-worth of matured leaf mulch to be spread over the growing areas. Cleaning up the entrance path, clearing moss growth and other deposits was our last task, before a lovely chat with a cup of tea and cookies to end our session. The garden is looking lovely with freshly sprouting daffodils & crocuses. You'll also be welcomed by the unmissable aroma of wild garlic. A great start to the month.

Thanks to all involved and Happy GoodGym Anniversary to Marta!

The One With Julian's 600th!

Saturday 4th January 2025

Written by Rachel Henry

Today was our first non Parkrun task of the year and It was no ordinary task as we were celebrating Julian's 600th good deed! That's a whole lot of good Julian's done in south east London ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ๐ŸŽ‰

We were back at the Maryon Park Community Garden today with an array of things to keep us busy. Laura was sweeping, Julian and Khai turning the compost and Marta and Cat weeding and getting rid of the dead leaves from the beds while me and Arthur were de-Christmasing the tree. We spotted a fallen over fence so Julian got to work fixing it and after a busy while it was time for coffee and lovely treats that Edna gets ready for us.

Great job team and a lovely start to 2025! On Wednesday we're at St Richards for some weeding!

Until next time.
