Toy Glory 6: The Shiny Fence

Saturday 4th July

Written by Rachel Henry

On Saturday morning we arrived at the Maryon Park Community Garden, ready to get stuck into our task for this month which included varnishing the fence and hosing down the toys in the kids area. In no time we were teamed up and getting splashed, muddy and varnishy getting the jobs done as well as lots of chatting between ourselves and with the lovely Tim and Edna who were hospitable as always, providing snacks and drinks after our exertions. I say "our", but Arthur and I mainly chatted to Edna and read books so I'm not sure I should get a good deed for that 😅

We left with a gift of mint from the herb garden for our meals and off to the rest of our weekends.

Great job team, we'll be back next month!

Toy Story 2026: When Woody met GoodGym!

Saturday 6th June

Written by Sarah M

Today we put the Gym in GoodGym at Maryon Park Community Garden in Charlton, where 9 of us met for today's community mission. Group one cleared various piles of broken wood & debris, including everything from doors & trellis to broken plant pots & grubby toys...What a load of rubbish...? Maybe not. Whilst a lot of the debris is due for collection & disposal on Monday, some of the toys were cleanable, hopefully for future use or donation to the local Toy Library.

Group two proved they were hard as snails, tackling some troublesome weed growth in various areas of the garden & helped cleaning the toys that had been found.

Good-gym rains supreme, as did the sky today, although gratefully waiting until our tasks were finished this morning ☔️

Thanks all, until next time!

Turning over an old leaf

Saturday 2nd May

Written by Sarah M

6 GoodGym-ers gathered at Maryon Park Community Garden on this gloriously sunny May morning for today's task.

After a quick catch up, Tim & Edna briefed us on our tasks for the day: (syca) more weeding, in various areas around the garden, "turning" the contents of one of the compost bins, and pruning away some plant overgrowth affecting the fences on one the side of the area.

Shovels, Spades, gloves and hedge trimmers at the ready, we got to work & with the encouragement of a family of red red Robins bobbing along.

A constructive hour or so passed, several trugs of weeds were added to the newly turned, rather fragrant compost bin, and we were rewarded with a very welcome tea break ☕️

Thanks all & have a great rest of the weekend!

Don't Go Raking my Bark...

Saturday 4th April

Written by Sarah M

Presenting this year's Easter Parade - Good-gym style!

12 GoodGym-ers met on a changeable Easter Saturday morning, some travelling from Park run to Bark run, for our Community Mission today at the lovely Maryon Park Community Garden.

We were met by Tim & Edna, as well as a veritable mountain of freshly delivered woodchip, which our task today was built around. The woodchip had to be moved uphill from the entrance to the Forest School area beyond the food growing plots.

Cue lots of teamwork and with shovels at the ready we were soon loading up wheelbarrows and relaying them up the hill to where more of the team were waiting with rakes to smooth over the woodchip in the Forest School.

After half an hour we'd already made a huge dent in the pile, getting it down to a definite hill, at which point resident beetle Ringo decided to make his objections known. Regrettably, Ringo did have to be re-housed, but is hopefully settling nicely in his new woodland home.

Soon the hill became a few scraps & it was time to sweep up the last few flakes, down tools and partake in a much appreciated cuppa ☕️

A very warm welcome to Mayuri on your first task.

Thanks all & see you soon 😊

Storm Amy: The Leaf Broadcast from Maryon Park!

Saturday 4th October 2025

Written by Sarah M

A blustery but thankfully dry Saturday morning in October blew 2 goodgym-ers to Maryon Park Community Garden in Charlton.

For anyone that's not visited, the garden is a community food growing area within one of Charlton 's many green spaces, where plothouders grow everything from pumpkins to tomatoes, beetroot to beans, and today we saw some pretty giant courgettes!

Our task today was to clear away a build-up of leaves from the entrance pathways, to make the area safer and tidier. Leafblower & shovels at the ready, we'd soon run out of space in the composting bins and it was time for a tidy up and a catch up with Tim & Edna.

Have a great weekend all! 😊

Getting swept off our feet at Maryon Park Gardens

Saturday 2nd August 2025

Written by Sarah M

Holiday season has arrived, which means Harvest time is on its way too, and the Community Garden at Maryon Wilson park in Charlton is looking amazing, brimming with flowers as well as crops ranging from cucumbers to sweet peas, and courgettes to rhubarb.

Today was our monthly mission here, and a great catch up with Tim and Edna. Our main task was chopping back overhanging foliage, bind weed and similar tree growth to help make the pathways easier to navigate. (Some long armed tree-lopping-choppers, which is possibly not the technical term, were a massive help with the higher branches...!)

A good old sweep up completed our work, so it was time for tea and snacks (massive thanks to Edna) and out through the woods to the rest of the weekend 😎
