The Bug's Head, Buzzingham Palace and The Grub Inn are open for business!

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Jess Smith

It was great to see 5 Goodgymers out in Windsor for tonight's task. We met at the lovely Trinity St Stephen's First School and found our task leader Sonia and other parents from the school.

She explained to us that the Year 4 parents had brought 3 bug hotels, as a leaving gift, for the school to create a pollinator garden and help aid the children's eco-learning. To create this wildlife haven we needed to dig a border flowerbed to allow space for the hotels and loads of pollinator friendly plants and flowers.

We got dug in straight away creating the flowerbed by removing the top layer of grass and soil. We were aided by some of the children who watered the ground for us to make it softer. Once the grass was removed, we turned the soil over and then added the peat-free compost. With our best Charlie Dimmock impressions we then arranged the plants and flowers, making sure we mixed colours, heights and varities to create a welcoming haven for bugs and insects to explore and make their home.

We think the little garden is a great legacy for the children to leave as they move on to their new schools and we hope that many children, and bugs, will enjoy this little haven.

Pretty. Needed. Chill!

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

This what3words is not only Sheila's marshalling point for the Windsor Parallel race, but also pretty much summarising the day so far. Meggie, Sheila, Agnija and myself have volunteered for this year's Windsor Parallel Festival. Sheila and myself have been assigned to marshaling, while Meggie ran the 10km race, as well as volunteering before and after. A huge cheer to her, and also to Sheila, who's marshalled for the Junior Park run in Maidenhead first thing in the morning and then cycled to Windsor!!! I've been stationed near the Avengers House, they have been filming here... shame I don't know much about it, I'll have to look it up. We'll be soon heading back to the festival.
Agnija has joined the volunteers group at the last minute and she was assigned to directing the traffic in the car park, doing a wonderful job of it! Well done everyone!!! I'm sure there is something for everyone here, I've seen earlier today cute animals being brought in, the stage being set-up, the stalls, the mayor arriving, all ready for everyone to have fun and chill.

On a warm evening, we were channeling wet, wet, wet...

Slough Report written by Slough runner

... helped by one of the watering cans being leaky!! The team coined a phrase ''don't be a drip, get a grip!'' and managed to ferry watering cans in a wheelbarrow so many times that all 5 of the water butts on the allotment were completely full, and still manage to water a lot of the flowers and vegetables as well! The team work and banter was excellent - so there was even time to smell the buddleia - which we decided was our favourite as well the butterlies' favourite! In parallel we managed to completely clear brambles, nettles and grasses to enable access for a lady who has just had hip surgery to get to her raspberry canes and rosemary bush.

A cracking time

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Slough runner

It was round two of soil shifting at Windsor Girls Schools tonight.

Didem, Helen and Jen met at The Binoy and set off walking. They soon bumped into Agni on her way to the task, followed by Mandy catching our tails as we arrived at the school. Adam met us at the task.

Equipped with a wheel barrow, spades, a fork, two trolleys and 3 bins we soon got to work moving the soil from a lawn at the front to a large planter at the rear of the school, working on pairs lightened the load.

Lots of to-ing and fro-ing, chat, laughter and Mandy's jokes helped the time fly by. Just time to share round the Heroes chocolates Gina had supplied for her 'Goodgym heroes' and a round of activity cards including counting in different languages and it was time to head our separate ways.

Pot-mania

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

Sheila and Agnija helped out at Braywick Plant Nursery, helping them get ready for spring. Our first task was to fill with compost, as many 10cm pots as would fit on the side bench. 364 pots later, the bench was full! They are now ready for transplanting plug plants We then moved on to finding all the 2 litre and 3 litre pots in amongst all the hundreds of pots that had been returned for re-use. We soon got our eye in, and there are piles of pots now waiting to be filled.
