Hammersmith and Fulham Report written by Shami Hogarth
They were low on volunteers this week so appreciated two newbies to this task. Asma was keen to join the GoodGym after hearing me race on how great it is, and this session was near work that only required an hour away from the office. Looks can be deceiving...we started of moving the tables from the church hall to the front and I felt like She- Ra (80s character for those too young to remember ;) they were so light I'm sure I could have spun them on my pinkie finger and flung them across! Rest assured I wasn't brave to attempt that but cool to imagine it. Then the chairs were set up and next onto moving the boxes of goods into the side room. The City Harvest van arrived and this is where Asma learnt something she never thought of before, how to manoeuvre the trolley without dropping the pallets, but mastered it she did. After watching the trial and error, I decided it was easier for me to carry in the pallets. The donation of Gail's bread required slicing in half and bagging up yummy looking pastries. We left when the hot meals were being delivered as the other volunteers for the Foodbank were around.

Itâs amazing what you can learn about a person after sitting next to them on a 10-hour flight â especially when their phone text size is set to âsevere eyesight issues,â making it very easy to accidentally meet the real them. So hi, Shami. Iâm the âmiserable cowâ you were apparently stuck beside, allegedly taking up âall the leg room.â Yes, I saw the message you fired off to your âOzâ group chat the second your seatbelt clicked. How awful for you to be stuck in the middle. But itâs a bit odd you formed such strong opinions about me considering we hadnât exchanged a single word. And for the record, I wasnât taking up an inch of space that wasnât part of my seat. Hereâs a helpful tip for next time: if comfort is that important, maybe pay for the seat you actually want⊠or join the business-class hopefuls. Revolutionary, I know. Then, more than halfway through the flight, you snapped at me to âturn downâ my phone â only to immediately retreat when you realised I had my headphones on. Again, this was after ten hours of zero interaction. Bold move for someone so bothered by imaginary leg-room crimes. The thing is, how you act, speak, and carry yourself says far more about you than it does about anyone around you. I genuinely feel a bit sorry for you. Calling me a âmiserable cowâ seems like pure projection â your whole vibe screamed âdeeply insecure,â and insecure people tend to lash out at whoeverâs closest. Do better. Enjoy Perth. And next time you feel the urge to be nasty to a stranger⊠maybe just donât.

The shift entailed using some (in my case, little) arm muscles to help unload the food delivery from the delightful Marvin, who did look doubtfully at me but I proved him wrong (just lol), to unpacking and flattening all the empty boxes,a good exercise for stamping out any frustrations indeed! Helping to pack up 50 bags to give for those with cooking provisions. Then to test those (little) arm muscles again to help unload the huge bags of clothes from the storage cupboard and trying to find the elusive men size large clothes, alas an appeal for mens clothing and carrier bags are needed again. Then it was time to hand over the reins to the next shift.
