A good drink

Saturday 12th July

Written by Jane

The Portsmouth Tree Wardens were super quick this morning. They had arrived early and already given the trees a very good drink - 25 litres each when I got there.

So, I helped load the cars and then did a litterpick afterwards.

A great balancing act

Saturday 5th July

Written by Jane

Jen, Dave, Alice and I joined the Portsmouth Tree Wardens to water the very many young trees at the Cascades Tree Nursery.

First we helped set up a production line to fill the watering cans from the 100 litre tank and lined up & tipped the cannisters to fill the tank.

We watered, did a little litter pick and relocated a family of snails who had taken up residence in a watering can. Jen and Dave showed great balance and agility by standing on the wall to water the hard-to-reach trees.

Square holes for young trees!

Saturday 22nd February

Written by Jane

I joined the Tree Wardens in the wild area of TamworthPark. They were super organised and welcoming. We planted 10 saplings near the pond and put in stakes to support them using a heavy-duty rammer. I learnt that trees prefer square holes plus fish, bone & blood for their first meal.

Planting for the future

Wednesday 29th January

Written by Judy Knapp

Welcome to Michelle for her first GoodGym task (and as it's a small world, Michelle already knew Yvonne from her running group!)

We joined Rachel, the Portsmouth City Council coordinator for responses to climate change and Public Health; Terry from the Havant Tree Wardens; about a dozen PCC Green & Clean operatives; and a handful of other volunteers.... between us we planted approx 150 tree whips in green spaces around Crookhorn.

We learned the planting techniques and the reasons trees are going to be vital for global health as the planet gets warmer.

(And we got some fresh air and exercise too!)

Space - the find-a-tree-here!

Wednesday 31st July 2024

Written by Judy Knapp

Portsmouth GoodGymers explored where no GoodGymer had gone before, to find new frontiers for young trees.

Portsmouth Tree Wardens had asked for potential planting sites for new trees this Autumn.

GoodGymers ran, walked, and maybe even beamed themselves up, to explore Portsmouth tree locations.

Let's hope the young trees will Live Long and Prosper!
