The more the Mary-er

Wandsworth Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

Last night’s GoodGym Wandsworth session kicked things off by welcoming Dominic to his very first session—great to have you with us, Dom! After a quick intro and a warm-up to get everything moving, we fired up our muscles and then our brains with a quiz question: which country drinks the most coffee per capita? A deceptively tricky one this week!

Then it was time to head out, jogging down to St Mary’s School where Isa was waiting to guide us to the nursery garden. School resources are tight, so the work we do here helps free up the caretaker to focus on other essential jobs around the school. And as we arrived, it was clear there was plenty to get stuck into.

The team didn’t hang about. Hannah, Sophie and Matthew took on the challenge of wrangling the old netting, carefully bringing it down ready for replacement. Dom did a fine job putting up the new netting like a pro. Nearby, Letizia and Felix turned their attention to the benches and raised beds, creating a work of art with a fresh coat of yellow and green paint.

Jo and Beth gave Mary a makeover, while Steph, Annabel, Ali and Caroline tackled a serious weeding task, which really made a difference. Everywhere you looked, people were grafting, chatting, and transforming the space bit by bit. By the end, the garden looked so much tidier and more welcoming. But the night wasn’t over just yet!

We made the most of the lovely outdoor space to squeeze in a fitness session—the “3-minute mountain leg challenge.” No hills? No problem. This session is designed to replicate the strength and endurance demands of hill running: three minutes per leg, split between one-legged step-ups and reverse lunges on the same leg. It’s tough, a little bit wobbly at times, but brilliant for building single-leg strength, stability and injury resilience—everything you need to power up real hills when they do appear.

After some determined efforts and some burning quads), we ran back to base for a well-earned stretch.

Next week’s task is still being confirmed, so keep an eye on [this space…] ( but we do know there will be a pizza social afterwards! Let us know if you’re coming so we can book enough space for some lovely carb loading!

Same time next week!

Jogging and logging

Wandsworth Report written by Sophie Humphrey

A great group of people gathered in Wandsworth tonight to do some good! Before setting off, we discussed what we each saw as the first signs of spring with sunlight being high on the wishlist along with flowers blossoming and birds singing - lovely!

We were off to Paradise Gardens to help them move some logs from trees that had been cut down and were lucky enough to spot some spring flowers en route. We got some rather attractive overcoats on to guard against the sap (although some found it to be a fragrant fabric freshener!).

We had a very dedicated team to help sort the existing logs and direct further log placement and we built quite the pile. We finished up with a fitness session with exercises spelling (you guessed it) LOGS!

Well done all and hope you feel the joys of spring this week!

Standing to a-trench-tion

Wandsworth Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

It was another busy night in Wandsworth yesterday, featuring a bit of thinking outside the (cardboard) box, a lovely visit from Cardiff GGers, a beautiful plough moon and the monthly pub quiz!

It all kicked off with some cheering for Annabel and Pritesh, who smashed the Olympic park half marathon yesterday, a reminder that there are two Missions this weekend, and welcoming Ben to his first ever GoodGym session. We then did our warm up, each had a guess at which country has the most islands (well done Felix!) and then set off for Doddington community garden.

We arrived soon after to find Beth, Johnnie, Catherine and Veronica already hard at work, and settled down to the tasks. These included pulling mallow, clearing grass, digging a trench (lovely job, Johnnie!) and laying down cardboard.

Turns out that it was the perfect day to be doing it - the plough moon traditionally marks the beginning of the growing season. We couldn't have timed it better! With such high energy levels we whipped through the jobs. Check out the very impressive before and after shots!

Not quite finished, we headed down to the square for fitness. This week we got competitive, pairing up for a challenge that involved dashing round the circuit combined with strength exercises. There was some amazing form from everybody, but Jordan and Felix's tactical approach saw them take gold. Great work everybody.

Next week we're back at Larkhall to do some prepping and planting - hope to see you there!

Pre-pearing for a chard goodbye

Wandsworth Report written by Sophie Humphrey

It definitely felt like a warmer Monday night in Wandsworth which was much appreciated. We marked the end of the Winter Olympics by discussing the events that we would love to magically become good at with some brave souls going for everything from skiing moguls to big air! Figure skating was another big hit but curling (a much safer choice you would think) sadly didn’t feature.

We were off to salvage what we could from the Goodgym garden to share with the wider Wandsworth community. A lot of effort went into digging up our prized trees and we got them out and ready for a new home (huge thanks to Jordan and his chariot with glamorous assistant Felix!). It was great to see how resourceful we can be as a group with people finding makeshift plant pots en route (well done Catherine) and repurposing compost bags to transport our beloved plants! We managed to harvest a few potatoes, gather some chard and also took some of our rosemary.

We finished up with a fitness session spelling out Clapham with different exercises (with a little sprinkle of creativity on the As - future exercise suggestions very welcome there!). A fond farewell to our little garden with a lot of love put in over the years - well done all for what we achieved there! Bonus spot was a huge furry cat who didn't want to miss out on saying goodbye. Look forward to giving our plants and tools a new home soon!

Crepe expectations

Wandsworth Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

We had a flipping great time in Wandsworth last night as we enjoyed pancake day, birthdays - and a whole lot of positive impact!

There was lots of good news to share, including these two upcoming missions:

Not only was it almost pancake day and a sweet social to look forward to, but it was also Jo's birthday - so there was plenty to celebrate. After our warm we each guessed how many pancakes are eaten across the UK today, with Ali's guess coming closest to the whopping 117 million total!

We set off for our task at Larkhall Park where after a bit of confusion about our meeting spot we met Theresa with tools and instructions. Our job for the evening was to weed an area so it can be planted up with hundreds of new plants, and to clear the troublesome bamboo - which was more stubborn than we anticipated.

After half an hour of solid effort we had made a big difference, and we just had time to squeeze in fitness session based on isometric holds to improve our strength and stability.

A quick run back to base and it was pancake time! Great work everybody. Sophie will be leading you in a session at the GoodGym garden next week, so why not sign up to start the week off right!
