Goodgym Barnet never gets Tired of Tiny Forest!

Barnet Report written by Paul Salman

Goodgym Barnet and members of the local community came together to do a little pick at the new baby Tiny Forest at Mutton Brook (Henlys corner.) We gathered for an initial chat about the future schedule of events set up by earthwatch. We will be monitoring carbon capture, water levels, habitats and biodiversity. The results will be collated and analysed through the Tiny Forest national web platform. It is hoped that we can engage more conversations around the positive effects of such woodland planting in an urban environment.

if you’d like to know more please check out this link for further details.

Do look up!

Our litter pick was fruitful with some particularly interesting examples. The highlight being a rubber tire which provided the pun headline and a play thing for Gus!

thanks for engaging in this community project and helping to improve our environment.

you did good!

Daniel wrote Thank you to everyone who came to the litter pick today! Great turnout! We found tires, traffic cones and tennis rackets! And collected 17 bags of rubbish for the Great British Spring Clean! The TF is coming along nicely.. some trees have started to sprout leaves! It has got a bit dry lately but all is looking well. Keep your eyes peeled for another event next month, around biodiversity! As always, if you have any ideas about events we can organise around the Tiny Forest, do let us know.

Tree mendous plant and re-cycle

Barnet Report written by Paul Salman

A few you good gym members came together to plant some trees in Mill Hill Barnet. The hundreds of trees were being planted as a memorial forest for the victims of COVID-19.

But of course planting new woodland is important in improving air quality, reduce flooding, improve water quality, and of course helping to remove carbon from the air.

Three of us cycled from Stephens house and gardens along an old railway line which emerged very near the site. We met others hard at work picking out the trees to plant at already specified locations. It was a cold beautiful day with bright sunshine so glorious conditions to plant new trees.

It was great to see lots of individuals, groups and young families getting stuck in to the planting. This is a truly an important investment for the future.

As a group we estimated we planted 15 to 20 trees before heading home. thank you for coming cycling / walking and doing some good!

We will be doing more of this in The New Year please join the community mission listed for tiny forests.

Wheelie good path made by goodgym barnet.

Barnet Report written by Paul Salman

A magnificent seven GoodGym members joined together to help Martin’s primary school in East Finchley with their forest paths. Six of us met at the Phoenix cinema chatted about health and safety discussing our favourite safety warning!…(yes that was a bad idea from me!) We warmed up with a slow run and picked up pace over the 1 km to the school. Well done Gyna on her first run for a long time! give her a shout out. We met up with Judith and the caretaker John to get stuck into moving woodchip into the school forest using wheelbarrows lit by our head torches. It was good fun but hard work particularly as one of the wheelbarrows had a puncture... (surely this beats being inside in a smelly gym for work out!) On completion we ran back to the Phoenix cinema and five of us had a social drink in the café. I would highly recommend the hot chocolate three choices of chocolate! I must go back! just goes to show you don’t need to see a film to support the Phoenix cinema.

well done for coming running and doing some good.

thought for the day...

What matters, always, is whether we’re cultivating our character. What matters is whether, by our actions, we are part of the solution rather than part of the problem. Are we helping, contributing, being a positive difference maker, even if only in the tiniest way?

Good character and good deeds. Those are up to you, always. And you can do it right, right now. We all can, always.

Leafleting

Barnet Report written by Beth Sawyer

We met at the Phoenix Cinema to collect the leaflets they wanted to be distributed around the neighbourhood. After some initial confusion, equipped with leaflets we took to the streets and were able to complete the distribution in good time. we ended up running quite a nice circuit of East Finchley and were done in time for a drink and chat afterwards.
