All the trees are paved with gold

Ealing Report written by Kash

When I think of Blondin Park, I picture a vast space shrouded in darkness, with a tarmac path lit by evenly spaced ground lights like an airport runway. Above it, a bunch of lights hover five or six feet in the air. They move forward with a slight jitter, so they're clearly not drones. What are they? GoodGymers in head torches, running to meet Linda at Blondin Park Pavilion!

For the last three years, our sessions at Blondin Park have mostly been a winter thing. Linda is one of those task owners who doesn't mind us hanging around the park after dark, doesn't mind seeing us through the coldest months of the year and, most importantly, Linda has hot chocolate. Really good hot chocolate.

But today was different. Picture this: the sun setting over the park's community orchard, its rays giving the burnt yellow grass a golden glow. Fallen apples, tree leaves, people's hair, everything catches the light. If only the massive pile of woodchip we're digging into could turn into gold too! But in a way, it already is gold. It's gold for the fruit trees, protecting their roots and providing nutrients. And it's gold for us too, putting our energy into something worthwhile.

We scrape away the dried grass around each tree as far as the drip line. We load woodchip into wheelbarrows, tip it around the trees, then rake it carefully so it doesn't touch the trunks. There are quite a few of us today: some arrive by bike, others walk or run individually, while four of us run together through three parks to get here. Maria, Amy, Jo, Richard, Kristian and Sevan scrape away the hard, sun-baked surface to reveal the earth beneath. Steph Ducat and Giles tirelessly load the wheelbarrows. Scott arrives straight from work, having battled everything TfL could throw at him, determined to make it - and immediately starts wheeling the queued barrows to empty them. Dora takes charge of raking the mulch spread by Scott, and later by Jo and Kash, neatly around each tree.

The team finishes just before dusk. The golden hour is gone. There'll be no golden glow in our hair or long shadows for the group photo. But that's ok. Ten fruit trees now have a solid layer of mulch around them. Great work, team – especially Giles, who joined his first GoodGym session today, and Dora, who came along thanks to Linda's persuasive skills.

What is no different from the winter version of this picture is the teamwork, the smiles, the satisfaction, and the woodchip, of course. And there is hot chocolate. Linda invites us into the pavilion café for refreshments. Only Steph accepts the hot chocolate offer, Richard opts for tea, and everyone else chooses cold drinks on such a warm evening. The head torches will be back soon enough. Until then, let's enjoy the summer sunshine!

Teamwork makes the drum work

Ealing Report written by Kash

On the last Tuesday of July, the temperatures didn't seem to drop at all, but neither did the number of GoodGymers at our regular weekday evening session! Maybe the holiday season hasn't quite kicked in yet, or perhaps Hanwell is proving just as hot a destination as Ibiza.

Another week of tasks in Hanwell brought ten eager GoodGymers ready to tackle whatever challenge awaited. We were delighted to see Kristian returning for another 7 km run after his GoodGym debut the previous Tuesday, joining Sevan and Kash for the journey. Hanwell brought together locals like Harvey and Richard, alongside regulars living in neighbouring boroughs, Afshin and Ash, making the journey for a Tuesday night workout. Steph Ducat, meanwhile, arrived looking battle-worn after an unpleasant encounter on the road, but wasn't about to miss the task, swapping running for some fresh air and volunteering while he recovers. It was great to see Freya again, and Maria, who cycled all the way from the eastern edge of the borough.

Arriving at the Stables in Brent Lodge Park, the team met Andrea from Hanwell Community Centre, one of the organisers of the Hanwell Hootie - a free, volunteer-led music festival celebrating Hanwell's legendary link to Jim Marshall, "The Father of Loud". Andrea had been rummaging through the Stables' attic in search of a set of rubbish bins that had gone missing in action, but they were nowhere to be found.

Missing bins weren't Andrea's only problem. Huge stacks of boxes had been piled tightly together, blocking access to the Hootie festival furniture. The collection of vintage chairs and sofas is always the first thing we pull out and clean when preparations for the festival begin each year. Now the furniture was completely inaccessible, setting up a headache for whoever needed it next, whether for the Hootie or another community event. Our mission was to undo the chaos caused by another team's haphazard storage of ten drum kits and to save future volunteers from the same predicament.

With twenty keen hands, we quickly rolled up our imaginary sleeves (it was far too hot for actual sleeves) and got to work. After shifting the boxes of drum kits from the first pallet wedged in the doorway, we finally managed to peek into the blocked room and saw... drum roll... even more mountains of boxes. Still no sign of the furniture.

"You know, this is impossible. I think we need to call it off," Andrea admitted, having a moment of doubt.

Impossible? There's no such word in the GoodGym Ealing dictionary! Sevan squeezed between the wall and the towering stacks of boxes to reach the back of the dark, packed room, where he finally spotted the hidden sofas and chairs. The question was: how do we get them out? Sevan reckoned that if we cleared enough space, the team could attack the task from both sides. That's exactly what we did.

Meanwhile, others removed another pallet of drum kits and freed the first sofa. The chairs and another couch soon followed it. The seemingly insurmountable challenge quickly turned into child's play for our large, well-coordinated team. Oh, and did I mention that Harvey found the missing bins?

We finished well ahead of schedule, neatly reorganising the furniture into an accessible space in the middle of the Stables and returning all the drum kits and amps to the side room. It was a solid functional workout, with enough lifting to get everyone sweating but enough teammates to make it fun and surprisingly easy.

Next week, our run heads to another corner of the borough for a mulching session. Expect plenty of shovelling, wheelbarrowing and teamwork. Sign up now!

Swing Into Full Shear

Ealing Report written by Kash

Since last year's cutback session at Hobbayne's Half Acre Woodland, the GoodGymers doubled in numbers, while the brambles, nettles, hawthorn and other nasties encroaching the public paths seemed to weaken. Our task owner, Dee, believed the drought was the reason and that a bit of rain would make the overgrowth explode as it had in the previous years.

Six GoodGym runners met in front of Ealing Broadway station for a 3.5km run to Hanwell and the same distance back. Among them was a new joiner, Kristian, who had thought the 7km would be a good challenge for him. While running in a group with Steph Ducat, Conor, Sevan, Chris and Kash, the distance turned out not to be such a challenge after all - Kristian kept a good, consistent pace all the way. Welcome, Kristian, and congratulations on your first GoodGym run!

Maria, Scott and Amy cycled, and Harvey walked to meet Dee and the runners under the Wharncliffe Viaduct near the Hanwell station. You may not know that the viaduct is quite a big thing in British industrial history - constructed in 1837, it was the first major design by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the engineer responsible for the rest of the Great Western Railway and the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol.

I couldn't resist that bridge tangent. Let's get back to Hanwell.

After a short ice-cream themed icebreaker, Dee handed the GoodGymers shears and suggested the best section of the path to tackle would be the tarmac way closest to Station Road. Doomed were all the brambles, nettles, hawthorns, ivy, and, surprisingly, bamboo plants that dared to grow through or over the fence. The most ambitious GoodGymers even cut tree branches with shears (and some solid willpower) alone! A sackful of rubbish was uncovered while cutting back the unruly plants, bagged, and diligently binned before the end of the session.

Shortly after 8pm, most of the team disbanded to make their way home. Conor, Kristian, Sevan and Kash decided to run back to Ealing Broadway. Little did they know, they were racing the Elizabeth line, which Chris decided to take. And they won! Was it a testament to GoodGymers' prowess, Hanwell station being underserved, or Lizzy's unreliability? I'll let you decide.

Next week, we are off for a similar route to reach the Stables in Brent Lodge Park and help sort the festival equipment after the Hanwell Hootie fever finally settled down. Sign up now to join us!
