The Magnificent Seven at Mulgrave

Monday 10th March

Written by Sallyann Hardwick

The weather is warming slightly and the days are starting to get longer. With the winter sliding slowly away and Spring knocking gently at the door we were pleased to be at Mulgrave Community Garden. Lucien had organised the session with Khan the inspiration behind this gem of a garden. There were two large bags of bulbs to be planted that will bring colour to the garden later in the year.

Sophie concentrated on a neglected corner beavering away under the light of torches which Bekah managed to capture well on camera whilst multi tasking as both gardener and photographer. It was Dan's first time at the garden and he has left a legacy of both a cleaner area by litter picking before planting a whole load of bulbs. Meanhile Siân who usually has to be coaxed away from a litter pick) surprised us all by walking past the litter picks and getting stuck right into the garden creating spaces and getting those bulbs planted up. Lucien cleared litter not only from the garden and surrounding areas but also from the various planters along the street which, without some TLC, can become filled with litter.

Whilst all this was going on I seemed to spend a lot of time chatting I did pick up some litter that the others had left me. Thankfully Eleanor had been planting bulbs all eveing and keeping an eye out as to where the bulbs had been planted so could direct me and the final bulbs for the night into the patches we hadn't yet gone to. This mind map will be so important as next Monday we are returning to plant the larger bulbs.... hope to see you there.

Look how well weedid at Mulgrave street

Monday 1st July 2024

Written by Sophie McClellan

This week, we were back on Mulgrave street to help Kahn from Mulgrave Street Action group keep the weeds at bay.

There was one particular bed that was in need of clearing, so we set to work. The main challenge, as always with gardening tasks, was deciding what constitutes a weed... But with clear guidance from Khan we were able to clear space for the plants to flourish and we ended up filling 6 bags full of weeds!

Special shout out goes to Afrah who joined us for the first time and Bekah who completed her 50th task today! Excellent work from both.

It is always a pleasure to work with Mulgrave street Action Group and it is fantastic to see how well the garden is doing! Well done for all your hard work folks - I'm sure next time we will be able to see the results of our efforts in full force!

Rain doesn't stop GoodGym play!!

Monday 29th April 2024

Written by Ema Quinn (She/her)

It turns out painting fences in the rain was never going to be a good idea! As we all began to arrive the heavens opened and we made a very quick decision to change the plan, luckily Ema had a feeling this would happen and had brought along the litter picking kits as a plan B!

It was such a down pour that we all agreed a speedy litterpick of the area would be best then home to get warm and dry!

We spread out in both directions of Mulgrave Steet and in 40 minutes 8 of us collected 7 full bags of litter. Soaking wet but satisfied with a job well done we all rushed off home. There's nothing like getting home and putting warm dry pj's on knowing you've done something good for the evening and made a difference. And it was lovely to see the flowers in the community garden loving the rain while we worked.

A huge well done to Vikky for completing her 5th session!

Lights, camera, action!

Saturday 2nd March 2024

Written by Pauline Harrison

One of our regular, and favourite, tasks: The Mulgrave Street Project, lead by the indomitable Khan, was preparing to go national!

A camera crew arrived bright and early on Saturday morning to document the amazing work of Khan and his volunteers at the Urbanscape Community Garden, for a new ITV1 show: Alan Titchmarsh's Gardening Clublaunches this month.

The new series, produced by Penny Lane Entertainment, is part-funded by GreenThumb, and will see Alan Titchmarsh, along with a team of experts, providing practical gardening tips for both aspiring and experienced gardeners

New GoodGymer, Melody arrived for her first session and was soon planting and weeding enthusiastically.

With fellow GoodGymers, Bekah, Ellie and Aditi, we worked through the morning to plant, weed and litterpick.

The garden looked amazing in the morning sunlight, extra shrubs and bushes were planted and trays of primroses added splashes of colour to the borders. And even though the sunshine soon gave way to persistent rain, it did not dampen our spirits.

The camera crew worked around us, capturing the community spirit, interviewing Khan, community volunteer Lizzie...and even had a few words with me.

By midday, cold, wet, but happy with our efforts, we tidied up and left Khan chatting with our newest GoodGymer, Tariq, who had dropped by to check out the garden.

Remember, to see the results of our labours, look out for the new TV series: Alan Titchmarsh's Gardening Club...

Who needs medals when you've got butter cups.

Monday 26th February 2024

Written by Sallyann Hardwick

On a clear bright evening 7 Goodgymers converged at Mulgrave Street. coming from various pounts of the compass they arrived by bikes, walking and running to get to the tranquility of Mulgrave Community Garden.

We were met by Khan who gave us our task today we needed to weed out the unwanted weeds so we left the space and room for the flowers to do their thing now spring is arriving.

There is something so beautifully calming about this space although that didnt stop the nearby streetlight impersonating morse code turning itself on and off.

Three bin bags of weeds later, and not without some chat, and the task was done. The team set out in their varying directions into the frosty night.

A lovely night all is well and we are fine and dandy (lion).

A Wheely weighty task

Monday 5th February 2024

Written by Sophie McClellan

This week we were once again helping Kahn and the Mulgrave Street action group to maintain their community garden.

Due to my poor timekeeping Sallyann stepped in last minute to lead the run from Hope Street (thank you!)

When all eight of us had arrived on Mulgrave Street, we were given a variety of tasks; from bulb planting to litter picking and cutting down the old sunflowers! We finished so quickly we even managed to do a quick litter pick of the street and be done with time to spare. Amongst the most interesting finds were some skateboard wheels, - weight lifting belt and an awful lot of bread!

The garden on Mulgrave Street is always a lovely place to be and we are always glad to help out. I've no doubt we'll be back again soon!
